Recommended Posts

Been doing some research on this prize and its very interesting list of past winners ranging from the 1st Winner in 1950:Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi 1950, Edward Heath 1963, European Commission 1969, Roy Jenkins 1972, Henry Kissinger 1987,Helmut Kohl /Francis Mittereand 1988, Tony Blair 1999,
Bill Clinton 2000,Junker 2006, Merkel 2008,Donald Tusk 2010,Herman Van Rumpuy 2014, Pope Francis 2016, with Pope John Paul getting it in 2004.

Kalergi was recognized as the founder of the first popular movement for a united Europe, and his ideas underpinned it as we see it now.
Makes for interesting research...

Charlemagne's empire lasted less than a century so is not exactly a great model for European Union. The Roman Empire was far more successful but then it was really a Mediterranean empire and included parts of North Africa  and the Middle East. As far as the Roman were concerned the Irish, Scots, Germans, Slavs etc were barbarians whom they wanted to keep out not let in.
