Thousands of Street Parties for Jo Cox

Recommended Posts

Thousands of street parties and baking competitions will be held across the country to celebrate the life of the former Labour MP Jo Cox.

The Duchess of Cornwall joined Jamie Oliver today to launch what campaigners hope will be the biggest community event since the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Great Get Together will involve tens of thousands of community events on the weekend of June 17 and 18, a year after the MP was killed.

Post here if you get invited or go to one!

I wont be going to any because I don't like socialising and all my neighbors are weirdos. Otherwise....

You're joking us right?

TBH it depends if we can ponce some funding for cakes from the local MP whether we have one. I'm not adverse to organising a party - we did one here for the Queen's jubilee (After finding photos in an attic of one in '77)

I'm always up for a party and my neighbours are great folk.

Struggling to get my head around this though, it seems an odd thing to do and I'm not too keen on the background political motivations here.

I'm out.

Nah you're missing the possibilities of hanging skulls from street lights, having face masks on of her and getting the kids to play 'shoot and shout'

Step up from the Jubilee where we huddled under a gazebo placed in the middle of the road in the pissing rain, nudged a few sausages over a smouldering BBQ and got extremely drunk.

It was very British.

Oh it was scorching for the queen's jubilee the other year (2012?). A neighbour who had stopped drinking donated his homebrew - a shopping trolley full. Costco gave us a cake. The Cllrs gave money for a bouncy castle. The backings got cleaned by the community and then decorated with bunting and balloons, tables and chairs. Someone did a BBQ. Neighbours talked to each other who had never spoken before.

Those who partook of the homebrew didn't get up the next day but it was a double bank holiday.

Sounds superb!:)

Thankfully we all managed severe hangovers so it wasn't a total write off.*

*Unlike the next day.

Isn't this quite political for royal endorsement?

I'm not sure what the point of this is?

Neither are the people who'll attend it, but that won't stop 'em.

Mass Virtue Signalling. Will be interesting to see how many chumps actually turn up.

The BBC will ise close in camera angles to make the crowds look huge (like they did with the trump travel ban protests) that or just send a film crew to an islington street party with corbyn and co present.

Maybe they could have a 21 gun salute, finish off the Labour MPs that will be left after the next GE?

And , yes thats in bad taste.

I still want to know where Mair got the gun from. They know it was stole from a ratter.

Here's my take on it. Various people want to hijack/pre-empt any celebrations of the first anniversary of the Brexit vote a few days later (remember Mr Farage's quote about 'independence day' etc).

Some may genuinely want to create some sort of feelgood factor in what they perceive to be a divided country. If that's true, uniting around the cause of somebody who was firmly opposed to Brexit is not the best way to go about it, in my view.

The rest will be the usual bunch of virtue signallers, minor celebs with new books/plays coming out plus tons of NGOs, charities etc who need to look like they're actually doing something useful with all their money. Some Chloe in a PR agency somewhere managed to get the thing to go viral and now it's turned into a massive group hug.
