I am in the unenviable position in the next few years of probably doing circa 30 to 40K miles per annum ( own car claiming mileage). I am looking at the options of buying a new car and came across a SsangYong Tivoli . Does any one on here drive ( or will admit to driving) a SsangYong? Your're asking it to do potentially 200K, unless the dealership is on the doorstep and honours giving you a replacement car for every issue I think it would be stretching it a bit. Round here its more Skodas (Octavia) & Toyota's (Prius or Avensis). The weird City ones that are allowed to use the waiting points in town are Pug van derived things... not sure I'd want to do a lot of miles in one of them though. I suppose if it was all short journeys multiple times a day (ie, local, but always travelling to the next 15 minute appointment) then it might be sensible to go for a small runabout. I'd also have a massive spreadsheet with total-cost-of-ownership calculations for all the different options. For example, you might be best off getting dealer miles specials and changing cars every two years (well, assuming you'll be in the newish car arena, which, for those miles, you might well need to be). I'd also look into things like buying a car for two years, then getting a Tesla 3 when they eventually turn up -- that'll give serious savings on fuel costs. The Ssangyong UglymofoSUV thingy was a Merc ML underneath. Probably use what ever they can get their mitts on. So much borrowing of power plants etc across the manufacturers it can mean that the same car with one engine has a high chance of being a lemon while with another engine its a peach. They also use E class Mercedes. We've got one (from new) expecting to do high mileage. Get a used example for Skoda/Ford money. You're going to be spending a lot of time at the wheel so best make the experience as rewarding as possible. They make long journeys a breeze. Can't kill a high miler toyota, very well put together with exceptional diesel engine. Rate Mazda's too though not driven one enough to truly compare. SNACR Posted February 7, 2017 Share Posted February 7, 2017 I had half a dozen Mazda 6's, not current shape admittedly, and they were all using a lot of oil before they hit the 100k mark. The Eagle Posted February 7, 2017 Share Posted February 7, 2017 You can't go wrong with a Kia or a Hyundai these days, they come with long warranties, are well built and most of their popular models are built in Europe. BTW, here in Germany a lot of Taxi drivers switched from Mercedes to the Toyota Prius due to reliability concerns with modern Mercedes cars and the extremely good reliability and low running costs of the Prius. I start from the position that most mass market cars these days are extremely well built and people saying "don't buy a <insert brand name here>" are basing it upon a rusty banger their mate had twenty years ago rather than the last ten years. I'd say, if anything they are now poor value compared to Ford as a result of the eye-catching warranty, but there was a time when they were fairly poorly viewed but the cars performed well, rust aside- say in the noughties. Ssangyong might just be at this point. If the thing is galvanised, I wouldn't discount it. Expect residuals to be poor, if the brand reputation builds in the meantime you might get a pleasant surprise but anything with 160-200k miles on it will not command much. I still wouldn't touch anything Renault, Fiat's still highly questionable and neither Mercedes or BMW have built a decent car, between them, that's lasted in the last quarter of a century. You know your cars better than I do SNACR but I think that backs my point to some extent as there are a lot of car makes that you haven't named as being poor and the default position theses days is a decent well built car. I was confidently told by a workmate that my 2 litre VWAG diesel engine would blow up at 60k miles; now more than double and running like it's new.
