Selling shares - tax to pay?

Recommended Posts

Guest

I have shares in a couple of dozen companies, mostly listed on FTSE etc.  They're held via an online share dealing platform.  When I come to sell shares, do I pay tax on the profit? Do I need to fill out a tax return? I've never had to fill out a return before as I pay tax via PAYE.

I think I have answered my own question ... I have a CGT allowance for each tax year of approx £10k. So, that means if I sell £10k of shares that cost me £5k, I have made a capital gain of £5k. I'm still within my year's allowance, so no tax to pay.
