JoeDavola
DTMark, have you ever visited Northern Ireland? Lots of nice countryside with the cities quite close by.

Only 2.5 miles to Brookwood, a minor station, but much further to Woking station and the fast train to Waterloo. £1500 pcm would be the minimum to be near Woking station. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-56249299.html Mind you that isn't hideously ugly and it's in tidy (if dated) condition with four bedrooms. No - Mum's side of family is originally from Ireland, so have been there - green, laidback, pretty, friendly, but have never been north of the border. workingpoor
If i could work remotely, i would let the house out and go and live in the Algarve. Cheapish living, good climate etc i recomend the far eastern end on the border with Spain. Get back to the UK for about £40 midweek

DTMark
Did anyone see "Wild Tales from the Village" over Christmas? Superbly shot documentary about wildlife in a village in France. Well worth watching. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b086k8db The village is "raised" so has stunning views, called Puycelsi. I mean to look into that but I'll bet it's very expensive. One-percent
Following on from previous suggestions regarding N Yorks, here are some nice examples: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-60567056.html a bit over priced but a gorgeous village http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-40094808.html bit cheaper and fab views over the sea http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-62728376.html very quaint village

It's quite amazing that we are throwing around links for houses on for half a million quid. Who the hell can afford these? I certainly can't. That second link you posted has double in price since 2011. Madness

They can fall a very long way so whilst it's nice to have a house it's good to have savings too. All of these "my house is my pension" people seem to have forgotten that you shouldn't have all your eggs in one basket.

JoeDavola
Yeah I can't comprehend how anyone without a fat inheritance can afford to pay a mortgage on, council tax, and maintenance on a £500K house. Plus the 2 or 3 kids that you'll presumably have knocking about said house. If someone wants to throw out a few career paths that will bring you to this (with the knowledge that after £43K you'll only take home 40% of what you earn anyway) then go ahead. I just don't see how the sums add up.

I've heard Wales is full of leather clad perverts. Just a rumor. If you buy a crusty roll, make sure it's wrapped; Christ knows what you'll catch otherwise. workingpoor
I recommend Llangollen and Chirk village in North Wales, lovely bit of countryside and canals. (not far from Wrexham i you need a large city)
