Photographer from the scene says the assassin was the police guard assigned to the Russian ambassador, had police ID.

I hope Obama has already contacted Putin to let him know that this wasn't the retaliation 'at a time and place of his choosing' that he mentioned in his press conference. Otherwise we may be closer to nuclear war than is comfortable.

From the BBC:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-38369962

Quote

Video of the event shows Mr Karlov making a speech when gunshots ring out.

The camera pulls back to show a smartly dressed gunman, wearing a suit and tie, waving a pistol and shouting.

He can be heard yelling "Don't forget about Aleppo, don't forget about Syria" and uses the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is great").

US state department spokesman John Kirby said US officials were aware of reports about the attack on the ambassador.

"We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

While there were protests in recent days, on a political level the Turkish and Russian governments have been co-operating in the Aleppo ceasefire operation, the BBC's Turkey correspondent, Mark Lowen, reports.

It is too early to know the motives of the attacker, who has not yet been named.

Turkey is in a bit of bother now.

Doesn't look remotely like the Turkish government is behind it, the attacker placed himself where he was sure to be killed himself, so likely a Muslim fanatic prepared to die. Seems likely to be someone close to one of the many organisations/factions attacked in Syria, the obvious candidate being Daesh.

Turkey has been strengthening relations with Russia recently.

A brutal attack that is part of a brutal regional conflict.

The killer was a police officer who was there as a guard...

There is a video in the Mail link i posted above. Killer goes on a rant for about 5 mins no sign of any security forces, then he is pictured dead with bullet holes all over the wall.
