Who'd be in the Army now?

Recommended Posts

Firstly we had Phil Shiner and the IHAT fiasco, now we have the PSNI trawling through 1000s of cases of soldiers who faced the IRA in the 70's and 80's. 2 Paratroopers in their 60's are going to be prosecuted for shooting dead IRA commander Joe McCann in 1972.

And how the hell is someone like Barra McGrory now DPP in NI? He was one of the IRAs favourite lawyers, represented Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams.

I wouldn't blame the armed forces if they started mutineering over the way they're being treated.

I'm with you. My son was fit to be tied when he returned from the last tour in Northern Ireland before the peace accord was signed. They knew all the players but, apart from searching their cars whenever possible, were unable to do anything about it. This, after his mate was shot and killed by an IRA sniper in front of him. He was so punchy, he had to be restrained from punching a copper's lights out by his best mate. ?

Not just NI but anywhere. You go risk mutilation or death fighting people whilst lots of the people you are fighting end up living in the UK. Give it a decade or two and some of the Al Qaeda/ISIS lot will be running things here.

These things are so murky it's almost impossible to determine what the real story is. Have a look at the subject of Robert Nairac. It's also accepted that people on our side were deliberately killed, or allowed to be killed, to protect high placed informants within the IRA.

If we're playing both sides it becomes an issue when our lot think they should be shooting to kill anyone that looks like they're on the other side. Particularly, if in the worst case the whole thing is a charade to invoke a terrorist threat that doesn't in reality exist.
