Yes but it wasn't sustainable and I really don't like wars

I don't like wars either... and it would be sustainable if TPTB stopped giving their corporate buddies massive tax breaks and spent more time chasing tax avoiders and evaders instead of demonising benefit 'cheats'....

Care homes run you (or the state) about £800/pw and most of the folk working in them are on national minimum.

It's a business. A very, very expensive and profitable one.

Care run by my local council (not care homes) but the same outlined by the OP is put out to tender on a patient by patient basics ,basically it`s like ebay but where the lowest bid wins ...very few offer a standard "rate" other than that`s the "reserve" price or starting point for the biding

Cooking, making beds and tidying up is unskilled labour. What does Jean expect for doing work that anyone can do?

And if Jean took some initiative and started her own aged care business, I'm sure she'd be doing quite well.

She's a slave of her own free will.

A rate of pay that makes work worth while would be a good starting point

If everyone got on there high horses like yourself  who would do the "unskilled" work anyone can do ? their will always be a need for these people all the poachers are never going to be game keepers for obvious reasons.... which i`m not sure you see

Open your eyes and look at the big picture  would be a good starting point ...there`s a reason we are not sending kids down chimneys any more and it`s not the discovery of north sea gas ...but we are heading that way once more for sure

My great Aunt, who is 89, is in one in Dorset.  800 quid a week.  She's going a bit deaf, but when we visited her, she mentioned she's had some nice lunches, such as Soup or an Omlette.  For that kind of dosh, I'd expect it to be made from quails eggs.

Moreover, I did some work for a bloke who owned a care home.  Lives in a Jacobean mansion, with new Lamborghini's & Range Rovers on the drive.  He had a team of gardeners too..

Indeed, however Blair had at least 2 huge majorities with which he could do what he wanted, the most notable thing he did was invade Iraq.

Care workers and indeed health workers at the coal face are massively under paid. My point was really that despite all the retoric, the main stream politicians, indeed any politicians will not do anything about it.

Lord knows what momentum would do if they got a sniff of power.

From up here on my big horse, it seems specialisation is a necessity unless you want to be paid peanuts. The market pays well those people with exceptional or rare products/services. A fair price for her labour is what the market is willing to bear, and in this case it's not really enough to live on.

If I was her, I'd be working 16 hours a week and collecting tax credits. I'm not denying its a broken system, but if enough people stop work then the government will at some point have to do something about it.
