200p Posted November 4, 2016 Share Posted November 4, 2016 With Woolworth s gone (largely replaced by Poundland) , and most of the high street shops not appearing to have signs in the window "looking for Christmas temp help",. Where are the next generation of workers going to get work experience or get a foot in the door? I know the Post Office have been advertising, so that is still good news. "We" as a nation shopping more at the discounters - are they taking on temps over the next 2 months? The pull for temporary staff from the Christmas buying rush will be in those areas: delivery drivers, warehouse and packing staff. Warehouse staff will be wherever the warehouses are but delivery drivers will be everywhere. These being presumably the very same people who will be buying the ?kondo book to help them declutter their wardrobes and houses. I know a handful of people who are into shopping and possessions. I know far more people who base their lives around their family, friends, hobbies or their pets (usually dogs); all much more worthwhile things IMO. That is actually the nearest I have come to hearing Black Friday mentioned in RL as opposed to in the media. I did like that last year a couple I know, caught up in the media hype, joined the queue to get into Tesco Extra when it opened at midnight. They grabbed some heavily discounted TV because other people were doing so. As they continued around the store they decided they didn't really want the telly anyway so put it back and left. I was actually quizzed by my ex the other day (we got on quite well) as to what I had actually bought in the last year. I suspect that zero hours contracts enabled by tax credits mean a lot of shops have all the flexible working staff they need, all year round.
