Turkey. The Purge Continues . . .

Recommended Posts

I see that Turkey - Erdogan anyway - has suspended another 13,000 policeman. Are there any left?

BBC reports that 4,000 teachers were 'purged' in one city alone, effectively closing all the schools. There simply aren't that many replacements.

15 of Turkey's universities are closed and, like so many schools and police stations, unlikely to re-open.

Is there any possible doubt that the guy is completely nuts?

We learned yesterday that Germany has dropped the case against the TV comedian who 'offended' him. But how totally pathetic of Merkel to even begin a prosecution in the first place, especially on the basis of an archaic law (from 1871) about insulting Heads of State. Putin could file a complaint every day, but he doesn't need sectioning.

Why do we indulge world leaders who are clearly mentally ill?

indeed.

worth watching closely, this is potentially one flashpoint that ourselves and the rest of europe might actually be in agreement on.

turkey is playing games.their ultimate objective is headship of the caliphate, not a bit-part player of the EU.

Was there last week and the news seemed to be entirely about:-

Moody's downgrade of Turkey was politically motivated (true but I think the downgrade was due to politics not politics itself),

Then later in the week the relationship between Turkey and Russia.

The local English paper seemed to be purposefully avoiding local news as were the Turkish versions.

Well, yes . . . kinda avoiding the issue that the guy has lost the plot.

As a historian, can't help but notice that ill-health and the mental health of leaders has resulted in many problems in Europe. The current map of Europe for a start. Roosevelt was not a well man. Stalin  . . . father of the purge . . . was also paranoid.

Now we have a clearly . . . let's say, irrational . . . guy, screwing up several million people . . . and we are not even allowed to joke about it without the threat of prosecution.

Imagine one day you're teaching in a primary school, and the next being tortured in a prison...

I would imagine that teaching in some primary schools is akin to being tortured in prison. :o

Have been receiving a lot of CVs from Turkish academics - desperate to get out. Some of them are really good people actaully. If you drive these people away you are heading back the dark ages..
