Andrew McP
Radio4's Thinking Allowed can often throw up sociological discussions which are far more interesting than you might expect. This week I was fascinated by a discussion with Richard Sennett about his current book. http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=030010782X You can listen to the broadcast here (until next Wednesday anyway). http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/thinkingallowed/ I found his thoughts fascinating, particularly on the endless cycle of government reforms in the UK, and on the culture of "consumption of potential"... SUVs that never go off-road, iPods that hold more music than you can possibly listen to, computers that are much faster than most people really need, and so on. Anyway, for those out there who enjoy a wider look at society and the things which influence our lives it's well worth a listen, and the books sounds like a very good read.
