Notting Hill Carnival 2016

Recommended Posts

Classic early example for me of the media lies about ethnic reality. Always pushed as a fantastic multi-ethnic happy day, whereas when I was growing up, everyone that I knew that went came back with tales of violence and intimidation - even my black mates.

If there was a 'white' festival with that many inter racial assaults and crimes, it would be closed down.

Also sounds like my idea of hell - every year you hear even worse reports of crime. Haven't a few people been stabbed in recent years? At least if you go to a club or a festival they tend to search you for weapons on the way in.

They tend not to have so many racially-based assaults, but for years you'd avoid a city centre if say Leeds or Chelsea football fans were coming to town. Not quite the same thing, as the football match wouldn't last for the two days.

The Carnival does seem to attract different "crews" from all over London - some there just to intimidate, others just to strut and show their face, yet others to rob and pillage...

The BBC will likely do what they did last year and show lots of middle aged white women swigging from cans of Red Stripe & eating jerk chicken whilst dancing drunkely in the street towards the end of the day.

I'm waiting for the year when the music causes all the local houses to collapse.

A lot of the locals merely board up their homes and then go on holiday elsewhere for a couple of days. Maybe they feel the rest of the year makes up for the inconvenience of the event.

Most of Notting Hill is a shithole anyway - I really don't see the attraction other than it's near Hyde Park.

Good point - I guess football club violence is the equivalent. Funny how that had specialist police squads, targetted actions against ringleaders, umpteen inches in the press, and fines against the clubs for bad behaviour, etc.

Notting Hill Carnival - no worries, taxpayer will pay the bill.

Just passed through Ladbroke Grove - almost everything boarded up including all the estate agents. And even within a day all the boards are smothered in graffiti. Sainsburys has huge wrap around two foot wide barrier.

The one good thing is that the sort of people who go to the Carnival won't be in your area for the day.

I don't know about Notting Hill. We have a St Paul's festival here.

It's getting worse and the arrest statistics are getting higher, you won't see this in the papers however.

How do I know? I used to work on the borough and do overtime for the carnival up until last year albeit in a civilian capacity nowadays. A police officer was even stabbed last year.

Its not somewhere where I'll ever be taking my daughter even though its a short train journey away. To be fair though on the 'family' day which is the first one, it's usually a bit quiter (thats the shift I'd be after).

The thing to hope for is 'PC Rain', that always keeps the workload down...

In the article linked above there was a link to this article on rape in schools:

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/revealed-more-than-1000-rapes-and-sex-assaults-at-london-schools-in-just-four-years-a3330726.html

which I compared with this map of ethnicity in London:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2950401/How-one-three-Londoners-born-abroad-areas-live-in.html

That's a bit uncomfortable, ain't it?

Just done another check - if you overlay the pakistani population of London by borough onto the ethnicity map then it actually becomes embarrasing.

Perfect opportunity to break into your "gangsta" neighbours flat and nab his drugs and cash.

Another multi cultural event that is actually a mono culture event.

Why cant the EDL march thru the Eastend and celebrate their working class history?

I went in 1987 and it was OK during the day - some quite good music, greasy fried food from street stalls etc - but it became rapidly very intimidating once it started to get dark. I seem to recall walking back to the part of South West London I lived in rather than take a chance with any of the nearby tube stations which were filled with wannabe yardies extracting money with menaces from anyone who looked like they might have some.
