notMyName
Well, my 2000 reg Honda CR-V is having it's MOT test on Tuesday, and to be honest I'm not sure whether this time will be it's last. I don't really look after the car, but I don't do many miles (12k in last 5 years) and I think this time will be the last. But if it passes I am willing to spend some hard earned on replacing bits to get it into shape for a few more years. So. Just a bit of fun. Will it pass? Or is it scrap heaven for my car? Happy to answer any questions
Bunfight
Yes - with advisories. It's Japanese, it'll run forever. It'll likely outlast you... If not just do what everyone else does and get PCP'd to the max! You'll get a lovely 'recession white' Audi for £400 a month. Good luck!
nome
All depends on the garage/tester, so much of what is assessed on the mot is purely down to the testers opinion rather than being an exact science.
Frank Hovis
I don't think my car has ever passed its MoT first time, even the first one. I'm not sure my last one did or the one before it. The one before that (my first, I've only had four cars) got written off before it became due for an MoT. There's always something minor like emission levels or a misaligned bulb. I'm guessing that this is because I always combine an MoT with a service so the sequence is MoT fail, service and sort out the minor issues, MoT retest and pass. They've never not passed on the day but first time pass - I don't recall one. So I voted "no".
MrPin
Why not keep it going, if it is mechanically good? My Lexus keeps going, and it's even older.

You barely drive it though Mr Pin; occasional trips to casinos, shooting parties and cocktail evenings won't rack up many miles.

Bossybabe
Even the 25 year old Landcruiser passed with no work in March. So I vote "pass".

Frank Hovis
Pass without issues or pass subject to one or two minor things getting sorted first? Surely that latter is a fail, which is how mine always fails on the morning inspection.
Riedquat
Surely that latter is a fail, which is how mine always fails on the morning inspection. Yes, but the type of fail they'll fix there and then and pass without charging you for another test.
Bossybabe
I applaud your HPC thrift! But then you live on the Tax Haven IOW. I have here to admit that due to my disability I can no longer drive the Landcruiser around - it's too high for me to get into and out of safely so I gave it to my son. Hence the Motability car. I've just ordered a RAV4 though to replace the Volvo because I've missed the Landcruiser so much. It's worth the same as I paid for it in 2005! It's cost me £363 a year plus servicing, which is reasonable, and one full set of tyres at £400 in the last 11 years.
Bossybabe
Pass without issues or pass subject to one or two minor things getting sorted first? This year without issues. Had new steering bushes(?) last year and two tyres the previous year. Replaced the timing belts about three years ago (time expired). One shock absorber about five years ago. notMyName
Why not keep it going, if it is mechanically good? My Lexus keeps going, and it's even older. I'm basically thinking that as long as the bodywork underneath is ok I'll keep it, and maybe even 'mod' it up a bit. My main worry is that it has started to rust from the inside of the rear wheel arches, (by the time I noticed it had rusted through) so I worry that there is more rust lurking around. The MOT station I use only does MOTs so there is no worry that they will just 'find' problems to fix, and the car has passed 6 out of 7 tests first time. I had to get new brake lines 2 years ago. It has been a really good and extremely reliable car, but it's getting to the age where lots of things need replacing. The timing belt is due, and a lot of the suspension could do with some tlc, but I can do those jobs myself to keep costs down, and I quite enjoy fixing things really. Plus I'm pretty tight, and I don't want to have to go car shopping I think I'll just ask the opinion of the guys at the garage while they are looking it over. MrPin
Yes, I hate car shopping as much as I hate clothes shopping. I usually come back with something silly.
chronyx
Pass wtih advisories I reckon, same as mine. Mine's an 03 and has only done 67000 miles. The rear driveshafts and some suspension parts are rusty, maybe it did boat launches in the past. I just gave it all good soaking with ACF50 to keep the rust at bay. I do need to take the wheel arch and sill liners off really, but I popped the grommets out on the underside and got as much in as possible
council dweller
Spray the underside with `Hammerite` every year.

Bossybabe
I'm saying pass, my 23 year old hilux passed in May. Only had an advisory for tyres showing signs of cracking on edges. The tyres were only two years old, but they were remoulds made in the Uk. Cracking choice of car!

And of course it's the vehicle of choice for those of the terrorist persuasion. When I got the Landcruiser, my son christened it the 'Taliban Staff Car".
