Private Landlords Pocket 9.3 Billion In Housing Benefit

Doubling from £4.6 billion in 2006.


That is a lot of taxpayers money. Worth noting that if it had been spent on Council Housing the money would have stayed in the public purse simply being recycled from central to local government. The current system is effectively a massive state subsidy to property owners who already receive generous tax reliefs.

It's a win win situation for the landlord - buy a property and basically get the government to pay off the mortgage in the form of housing benefits!!! Grrrr... The government really need to clamp down on buy to let but they won', apart from a bit of noise and token taxes - they won't do anything as they pretty much have their noses in the trough as well!!

I just followed the link to 'entitledto ' website (name says it all really) that works out benefits. Put some random numbers in:


4 kids under 12

Renting privately in London

One person working, earning 1,500 per month and paying into private pension

The benefit entitlement is 554 PER WEEK and when UC is brought in IT GOES UP slightly.

No wonder the country is fooked

Have a play with the figures on there, it really is eye opening

The irony is that it's been the Tory Brexiteers like Boris who have been doing the most squealing about the need to retain and escalate these welfare benefits. They blame the EU for subsidy and benefits culture, but nowhere else in Europe hands out benefits and subsidies on this scale. This is a uniquely British problem. As is the economic need for escalating inward migration to support house values.

I hardly think it's only brexiteers or Boris.

From a previous article: In the post-war period the number of new homes peaked at 352,000 in 1968, while the number of new social homes reached its highest level of 207,730 in 1954.

We haven't built 'affordable housing' (now an oxymoron) in any volume since the war.
