300 workers face the axe

By Kirsty Marston

More than 300 workers were facing the axe today after a high street giant announced it was planning to move its entire operation out of Telford.

Workers from Wincanton and Argos Telford Distribution Centre on Stafford Park 10 were told about the possible job losses in a series of meetings yesterday.

Bosses said they were looking for alternative uses to avoid closing the site and save the jobs.

However, the depot could close in June if another company is not found.

Workers said many walked out in the middle of their shift when bosses handed them letters telling them of the plans at 2.30pm.

A spokesman for the shop and distribution trade union, Usdaw, said 209 permanent members of staff were employed at the site with more than 100 temporary staff.
