“Just a slowing of uridashi issuance will be NZ dollar negative as many previous issues will start to mature over the coming months,” added Mr Redeker, who also suggested that future uridashi issuance may be switched to other high-yielding currencies such as the South African rand or Mexican peso.

JP Morgan said in a note that it shared the worries of the New Zealand central bank, and recommended its clients build short-NZ dollar positions as a result.

With New Zealand house prices also falling 1.7 per cent in December, potentially a dovish factor for the future path of interest rates, the currency fell 0.7c to $0.6784 against the US dollar, 0.6c to A$0.9100 against the Australian dollar and Y0.75 to Y78.22 against the yen.
