Savings Accounts If Expat

Recommended Posts

I get the impression that many expats still keep their UK band and savings accounts. But there are also special expat savings accounts. To open a UK savings account FSA rules insist that you are a UK resident.

I am confused !

I looked into this when I emigrated. Basically you can keep all the accounts you currently have but you can't normally open new standard accounts. Some banks (e.g. ING) require that you close your account when you emigrate. I think the special expat accounts which are available are mostly aimed at people who live in tax havens such as the Cayman Islands.

With ISAs, you can keep your current ISA, but you cannot continue to contribute while you're abroad. Plus, I have to pay US income tax on my ISA interest :(.
