Iran And The Nuclear Revolution

Haven't heard much about this news recently, and obviously not really related to house prices (at least not in any direct form), but what do people think about Iran's breaking the seals on the nuclear research facilities. Couple of thoughts I had;

(1) The research is solely for civilian purposes (industrial and household power) - if this is the case, is this an indication that the "peak oil" issues that have been discussed so widely on here are much more real? Why would an oil rich state invest in nuclear power?

(2) The research is for military purposes and Iran's research is a protection for the economic turmoil that may ensue from the switch to petro-euro's, and the possibility of US declaration of war.

Any others?

Well, it might be a matter of pride.

Having said that, everything will change if and when Islamic rule comes to an end. Iran's hatred of Israel, for example, seems to be purely ideological, and from a geopolitical point of view makes no sense. Iran is not an Arab country, and its main potential enemy are the Arab, Sunni states to the West. From a religious point of view, who's killing all the Shiites in Iraq? Who's attacking Shiite mosques in Pakistan? Who was persecuting Shiites in Afghanistan? Not Israel. How many Iranians have been killed by Israelis in the last thirty years? How many Iranians have been killed by a Sunni-lead Iraq?

Under the Shah Iran and Israel had relatively good relations. Iran and Israel are natural allies, with no conflict of interest.

I wouldn't have too many problems about a secular Iran having nuclear weapons. Certainly safer than Pakistan having them!

America should aim for regime change in Iran, because it would make a big difference. However in my opinion it can only be achieved with great subtlety.

Iran need nuclear energy like Eskimos need ice and they needed to be stopped else we will all be nuked by them mad mullahs one day for not converting to Islam.

Bush or his replacement will see the economy go down after the Oil/USD$ link is broken in March so the American economy will suffer and people will see this and back the leader in invading Iran.

9-11 was faked by Bush and a lot of mistakes where made and these are coming back to haunt him so if the same trick is used twice then my guess it will involve bio/chemical weapons as it will be easier to get away with this.

Sad but this is the world we live in

Iran's oil fields were heavily depleted during the time of the Shah, with peak output as long ago as 1972. They have a respectable but hardly vast oil endowment. There are no coal reserves in Iran, which would provide an alternative fuel for power generation. They do have some hydro, but it's limited. Iran has a large population (about equal to UK). Nuclear is not irrational as a long term strategy, especially if they perceive they'll make more money selling oil for trade than burning it to generate domestic electricity. They are probably right.
