Interest rate cuts?

Economists said reports of a pick-up in wages and prices charged by services firms last month meant the odds on lower borrowing cos t s had lengthened.

Malcolm Barr, a JP Morgan economist, said attention would now focus on whether Steven Nickell would continue to separate himself from colleagues on the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England by voting again for a rate cut next week.

Barr said: "Our view prior to this morning's data was that the odds on a February rate cut were 60-40 against - this morning's release makes that look more like 75-25."
