Two pasty-faced youths tell me there is a Pokemon lurking in the alleyway near my flat.

i can't see it, but they can with their telecommunicator phaser thingies.

Should I be worried?

If they are only youths I would just leave them to play their childish game.

It's the 20-30 somethings giddily running around chasing imaginary cartoon characters that we need to find some kind of final solution for.

They must mistaken, the Pokémom is over on Gropecunt Lane.

5.45, outside Colchester Town hall this morning, a yoof, phone in hand was trying to catch one.

Yes, 0545 hours.

There's a Pokey Spot across the road from my house

Turns out that doesn't mean what I thought it meant.

I know HPC stands for Home for Peevish Codgers but really, this seems like harmless fun. No more absurd than paying thousands of pounds a year to watch strangers try to kick a ball into a net. At least there's an element of physical activity and participation with this!

Agreed, it's great to see phones being used to aid socialising, rather than socialising via phones.

I think I have seen a German video of someone demonstrating that skill.

Well, I admit to Pokemon hunting with my 9 year old, this afternoon. Nice and sunny, walked for a good hour and had a chat with others doing the same. Probably spoke to more strangers today than in the last 6 months...

The servers suck though and unless they improve dramatically I reckon many will give it up. For now, probably just novelty value.

A man who drinks in the same pub as me plays a game called Portal. Apparently this Pokemon game is the same game engine with a different front end. He travels miles, often by running, playing portal and has met a lot of other players. Maybe this is a new trend, outdoor sociable computer games.

It's great IMHO, like Geocaching for getting you out and finding things but with a game element as well.

The sort of thing oldies can play with their grandchildren and trick them into going for a long walk on the grounds that they might find a Pokemon at the top of the far hill.

Isn't this just another form of spotting or collecting - i.e as in train, bus or aircraft?

I should imagine it is going to be very popular with commuters where I live since you are more likely to find a rare Pokemon character at the station than a southern rail train.

Ageed. Two of mine have been out quite a bit more over the last week. Middle son walked the dog whilst out looking today, bonus.

It was lovely seeing other young people out and about too.

We did watch some YouTube footage this morning of a huge wave of people who found a Charizard somewhere in the States, I think. They were all ages.

I think the main thing is it's like the game but in a real place. In the game on the DS you'd walk around looking for Pokemon. You'd go to the gym (not sure what that does) and other key places. What they've done is put the game on the street so rather than just walking and looking for Pokemon with your fingers on a DS, you've now got to go out and about. The next thing is to battle your Pokemon to make them stronger and for them to evolve (so I believe). If they can bring that to life it would further enhance the fun and create more interaction. That's my take on it.

My son is into this Pokemon thing - I think it is great - he's walked about 5k this weekend (normally it is torture trying to get him out of the house), trying to get eggs to hatch or somesuch.

I find the adults playing the thing a bit weird, though.

I caught a level 97 Pigeotto today... Apparently. My kids have their own Pokemon accounts but the servers are grotesquely overburdened so they are using my google account, making me a level 4 trainer.
