Whats In A Name

Recommended Posts

A couple I know recently decided not to move to a place called Rottingdean because the missus 'didn't like the name'. They went for the 'village' next to it along the coast called Saltdean. I was somewhat incredulous as Rottingdean=historical village with a duckpond, village green, pretty pubs, Rudyard Kiplings gaff (of 5 years) and has a real heart to it. Saltdean has one pub - a nasty beefeater type place, and is a huge sprawl of post 50s bungalows and ugly houses crammed together with only said 'pub' sited in the middle of an exposed treeless park cum mini golf course and has absolutely no centre to it whatsoever. Some people huh, no taste. Address, address, address seems to be more important than location to some.

Canberra, the city I live in, has an area which was developed in the 70's called Swinger Hill. I actually knew someone who had come from a Queensland country area who rented a townhouse there for 6 months just so he could freak out the folks back home.

Also one of the University's Halls of Residence was going to be named after some dignitary, but the students kept referring to it as Toad Hall and eventually the University heirarchy gave in, installed a painted garden-ornament-type frog out front, and Toad it is :)). I was a resident there myself. And yes, a stream with willows does run past.
