Today Show announcer Richard Wilkins said he had just been handed official confirmation of Mr Packer's death at 68. He said a statement from Tony Ritchie, Nine head of news, said: "Mrs Kerry Packer and her children James and Gretel sadly report the passing last evening of her husband and their father Kerry. "He died peacefully at home with his family at his bedside. "He will be lovingly remembered and missed enormously. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced." His death on Monday night was announced at the end of the Today show on his Nine Network just before 9am (AEDT). Today presenter Richard Wilkins said he had just been handed official confirmation of Mr Packer's death at 68. He said a statement from Tony Ritchie, Nine head of news, said: "Mrs Kerry Packer and her children James and Gretel sadly report the passing last evening of her husband and their father Kerry. "He died peacefully at home with his family at his bedside. "He will be lovingly remembered and missed enormously. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced." Mr Packer had suffered major health problems, including suffering a heart attack while playing polo at Warwick Farm in Sydney in 1990. He underwent a heart bypass surgery later that year, but had a second heart attack in 1995. In November 22, 2000 he received a transplanted kidney donated by pilot and friend Nicholas Ross. Mr Packer controlled an empire which ranged from magazines and television networks to petrochemicals, heavy engineering, ski resorts, rural properties, diamond exploration, coalmines, supermarket coupons and casinos. Mr Packer headed BRW magazines list of Australia's most prodigious moneymakers with a personal wealth of $6.9 billion. He was also the country's biggest punter, wagering millions at a time at racetracks and casinos, and one of its toughest and shrewdest business operators. He once netted over $700 million by selling Channel Nine to Alan Bond, then buying it back from him three years later. He turned the cricket world upside down with his World Series revolution in 1977, which ended with him getting what he wanted in the first place - the rights to televise top matches. Apparently, on one if his many casino visits he was sat next to a man who continually informed people how rich he was. He constantly woudl say he was worth 100million and how very rich he was etc etc ad nauseum. Kerry leant across the table and said "flip you for it". The guy shat it. Anyway, his casino's bought misery to many Australian's, I used to live in Melbourne not far from the crown casino where a child was found dead in the car at some ridiculas temperature, her mother had left her to go and play the pokie (slot) machines. I'm sure there will be plenty of tears shed for him, hope his kids enjoy their inheritance. Gambling addiction causes Australia no end of problems. Fortunately, there are many like that. I never met Packer, but I did meet his former son-in-law. His employees wanted me to run some money for him (the son-in-law), but we didnt get along that well. He was someone of very strong opinions that would have been hard to work for, or even manage money for. Kerry Packer was a very shrewd man. His greatest coup was of course to upset the cricket establishment, but in terms of money-making, his selling of Channel 9 to Alan Bond and buying it back 4 years later for far less, catapulted him into the super rich league. He also withdrew a lot of money from stocks just before the '87 crash, as did Jimmy Goldsmith, another of my heroes. My favourite Jimmy story; Before he married the Petino heiress, her father said to Goldsmith, "Our family isn't in the habit of marrying Jews". Really, said Goldsmith, "my family isn't in the habit of marrying Red Indians". Bob Maxwell is possibly my 'favourite' business figure, post war. He built himself up from literally nothing, into a war hero (he obtained an MC), fluent in several languages, a buccaneering businessman and had the ear of top politicians the world over. His life story really does read as boy's own fiction. There are many unassuming wealthy people, but there are also many who are not. I have a lot of time for Rupert Murdoch, though many like to paint him as the devil, as he is an undoubted visionary. Philip Green, OTOH, I've met and have little time for. It's wrong to say though, that all charasmatic businessmen are unlikable. Donald Trump (Mr. New York) appears down to earth despite his brashness. His personality probably saved the banks foreclosing on him in the early 90s.......Though he could find himself in trouble again if he doesn't liquidate quickly.
