Austria 'far Right' Party, Election Re-Run, Postal Vote Fraud Etc

Recommended Posts

Didn't see a thread, but this is quite significant:

Austria's highest court has annulled the result of the presidential election narrowly lost by the candidate of the far-right Freedom Party.

The party had challenged the result, saying that postal votes had been illegally and improperly handled. The Freedom Party candidate, Norbert Hofer, lost the election to the former leader of the Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen, by just 30,863 votes or less than one percentage point.

The election will now be re-run.

Announcing the decision, Gerhard Holzinger, head of the Constitutional Court, said: "The challenge brought by Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache against the 22 May election... has been upheld."

There is no actual suspicion of fraud, but the procedures supposed to be in place for counting postal votes were widely ignored (as apparently, they always have been, it's just that the postal votes have never been material to the result before)

As well as the actual result, It will be interesting to see if the relationship of postal votes to actual votes is the same this time round, as that might indicate that there had been fraud previously

Good. The Austrian people should be allowed to choose fairly, without voting fraud and 'mishandling' of votes.

Hopefully the 'right wing' will win and help to tear the EU apart.

They aren't right wing anyway, in my view. Wanting to leave the EU and control immigration is not right wing. It's just good sense.
