TheCountOfNowhere
Proof, if it were needed, that the MSM are back on full 2007 property porn mode. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/escape-to-the-chateau/episode-guide And from march 2007 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-445628/Fawltski-Towers-NOT-turn-Slovak-castle-chi-chi-hotel.html I like Dick Strawbridge and found the program interesting. For me it just showed up the lunacy of UK property prices.
eek
I don't think it's a bargain. Remember you have to maintain a property and a chateau is hardly a small place to keep maintained.

It's a money pit for sure. But i'd rather live in a dilapidated castle for £250K than a dilapidated 2 bed semi in Luton for £500K.

Blod
I didn't realize that Dick Strawbridge was living in a flat in Essex. The last thing I saw him in he was living in a big old house in the West Country. Bit of a change to go from that to living in rural France in a chateau. As a child my parents let us holiday in a hunters lodge in a village in rural France so can appreciate some of the issues he will face. I note that the spell checker must be broken over at Channel Four as the first episode is listed as "Finfing The Chateau".

He was married to Brigit Strawbridge and the couple have two children, James and Charlotte, but the couple separated in 2010.[3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Strawbridge They bought some nice place to go all eco at. They've all got media work now I think.

“Nasty Piece of work”
Nice place, but very French having your Tom Tit floating in the moat.
dgul
The French understand chateau. Costs zK to just run the place, yK in tax, xK in maintenance, vK on making it habitable (one off), wK to get to work because the place is in the middle of nowhere - plus inconvenience costs (cold, no friends, no culture, etc). If you don't earn at least 4*(z+y+x+w+v)K then you can't afford it. The asking price isn't particularly relevant. ... British people think '10 bedrooms for £250K!' and stop there. . janch
I was wondering what had happened to Brigit and the grown-up children. I thought perhaps he was having a mid-life crisis. nome
Just the usual contrived rubbish... oooh will they manage to complete it on time? Will they run out of money? I do quite like the guy but I suspect that even before he embarked on a very lucrative tv career he would have had the means to do this kind of project several times over. I expect there is some merit in that comment. Certainly a nice army pension would allow him some freedom to explore certain carears that a penniless serf would struggle with. Still, he's a likable chap IMHO and interesting to see. At the end of the day his tv money might dry up and business investment collapse, being on the telly is no guarantee of success. I wish him well, he's taken on quite an undertaking. And as per my original post...it's like we're back in 2007, it's like the banks did not collapse. But they did. “Nasty Piece of work”
There was a suitable piece on MSN (no link), saying everything is now dandy, he married the awful woman and Unicorns exist. Gosh, what a surprise.

Well, army do okay, but it's not like he was in finance... Lt Colonel pay about £70-80k Pension about £40k ? + £100k lump sum, say.
richc
The timelines and the cost of the renovation are completely unbelievable. I think he claimed to have spent less than 100k and 10 months to redo the place. The labour taxes alone on the builders would have been more than that. Blod
I agree. There aren't any engineering challenges in tarting up a chateau. What would have interested me is if they set out to reduce running cost to nil by using a mix of technics, both energy use and creation. However I will have to wait till it airs to see whether he's stayed true to his roots. Edited June 7, 2016 by Blod

Wikipedia says he's had a new spouse from 2013...so that implies he was married in 2013...he's getting married while the show is being filmed...so its maybe 2 or 3 years old. Long enough to film 10month show Reminds me a bit of this....build an aircraft in 15 shows...but it never actually flew. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Plane_Is_Born "According to reports the finished kit plane flown in the programme is not the one that was shown being built. Due to pressure of time "G-CHET" was used for the flying sequences. The aircraft that was built during the series was registered "G-OIZI"(i2i television) and never actually flew.[citation needed]" Remebember, it's a TV show...it's entertainment...it's not meant to be 100% factual. I for one will watch and enjoy this one. We're all living the property dream again...what can possible go wrong.
