workingpoor
Seems the effects of previous events around the Med & Belgium have put people off lesiure travelling. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36329580 Thomas Cook's share price has fallen almost 18% after the travel company announced summer bookings were down 5% compared with last year. The company said holidaymakers were avoiding Turkey, usually a popular destination, because of safety fears. Travel to Belgium had also seen a "sharp decline in demand" after the Brussels attacks. Revenues for the past six months fell to £2.67bn, down from £2.74bn for the same period last year. The company said the Brussels airport attack in March had significantly affected its visitor revenues from Belgium, due to "operational disruption to our flying programme, a high level of cancellations and a significant drop in customer demand". winkie
...I would think Thomas Cook is down 18% mainly because more and more people are organising their own holidays, itinerary and transport, low cost airlines, car hire or trains and ferries...... workingpoor
Think again: Terror fears drive tourists away from Europe in droves https://www.rt.com/uk/343803-terror-fears-europe-tourism/ Terrorism following the Brussels and Paris attacks is driving tourists away from Europe, while Brits are choosing safe destinations closer to home over fears of attacks in North Africa and Turkey, industry leaders say. Eurostar, the high-speed rail operator linking the UK to mainland Europe, says passenger numbers have dwindled as people from Asia and the US are too afraid to travel due to perceived terrorism threats. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics also show visitor numbers to normally popular countries in Europe have declined between 12 and 35 percent in the first three months of 2016. Terrorism expert Greg Barton, from Melbournes Deakin University, says the nature of the Paris and Brussels attacks was particularly frightening for travelers. workingpoor
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-36365957 Tunisian officials have urged the UK government to relax its advice warning against all but essential travel to the country, after a 90% drop in British visitors in the first part of 2016. The guidance has been in place since 31 British holidaymakers were killed in two terror attacks in Tunisia in 2015. The Tunisian ambassador to the UK said the government should take into account security improvements since last year. The Foreign Office said the safety of British nationals was its main concern. Thirty Britons were among 39 people killed when a gunman opened fire on tourists in a beach resort near Sousse on Tunisia's Mediterranean coast in June last year. UK tour operators stopped all package holidays to Tunisia in July following a change in travel advice from the Foreign Office, which still says further terrorist attacks are "highly likely". Some annecdotes from people who have visited in the last 6 months. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-36366647 "This is purely because of insurance reasons: if I slip and break my leg, I get on a plane to come home and deal with it at a hospital in the UK"
Guest eight
I thought we were supposed to be in cataclysmic austerity, with every other person reliant on payday loans and food banks. Shouldn't holiday travel be down anyway?
