Manchester Collapse

New lift bridge under construction crashes to the ground - apparently cable failure say eyewitnesses. I pass it every day, the bridge deck was being worked on daily in the fully raised position (which is at the same height as the existing M60 Barton bridge) with construction vehicles and containers up there. Fortunately no one was killed or injured. Looks like the steel deck has taken a chunk out of a concrete column on the way down, and the underside of it has 'got a bit bent' when hitting the concrete foundations at the bottom. Ship canal is now blocked.

Barely got a mention in the news, Old Trafford fiasco far more newsworthy it seems.

Seem a rare occurrence in this country- error in design calculations, dodgy Chinese steel, bad construction, or what?

Discussed this at length at work on Monday when it happened. Very lucky not to injure anyone, H&S will be all over it like a rash so it'll be interesting to see what the outcome is.

The costs for the contractor after this cluster fu8k will be incalculable. Peel Holdings are the client and are unlikely to go easy on any late penalty payments.

Delays due to HSE investigation before remedial work can even be considered. Existing work to the concrete cores and base will almost certainly be condemned. Steel bridge likely to be written off. Cost of additional craneage to remove bridge. Blockage to the ship canal etc etc

Surprised it hasnt been blamed on Van Gaal.

But ive not read BBC footballs phil Mcnultys view on it yet, so it probably has been.

Wouldnt have happened under Mourinho

It should have made the national news surely?

Wasn't there a serious accident on the new Forth Road Bridge a few weeks ago?

Yes, but someone was killed in that accident. Says no-one was hurt in this one (and the Manchester bridge isn't as high profile either).

What does Tim Peake think about it - surely he saw it happen?

steady for half an hour on the difference in Gravity at the top of the bridge and the bottom.

That`s the spirit

The dents will knock out. A bit of Polyfilla for the chipped column and Bob's your Uncle.

Failing that, I bet they can find some gullible American to buy a secondhand bridge....

Can't see anyone being keen to take a tall boat under when it's finished now.

Looks like it was some sort of steel cable and pulley mechanism. Would have thought an acme screw affair would be much safer although I suspect maybe higher maintenance.

Dashcam footage of the moment the deck starts to drop, and then comes crashing down.

A fork lift truck apparently slides off and gets thrown into the canal.

The mangled scaffolding at the top of one of the columns is still there, seems a bit daft that they haven't made it safe, as that too could come crashing down, and surely they are investigating on the ground around the bridge.
