Frank Hovis Posted May 5, 2016 Share Posted May 5, 2016 Trinity Mirror's New Day newspaper to close 'after poor sales'Daily newspaper the New Day is set to close on Friday, just nine weeks after it was launched. Publisher Trinity Mirror said it was "disappointing" but circulation for the title was "below our expectations". The paper was launched in February as Trinity reported a £14.4m fall in annual pre-tax profit to £67.2m. It had hoped to sell about 200,000 copies a day, but sales are reported to have fallen to about 40,000. I think I see the problem: In its trading update Trinity said: "Although the New Day has received many supportive reviews and built a strong following on Facebook, the circulation for the title is below our expectations. "Whilst disappointing, the launch and subsequent closure have provided new insights into enhancing our newspapers and a number of these opportunities will be considered over time." I don't know why we've folded, plenty of people "liked" us on Facebook. Durrr, my brain hurts. People buy papers for various reasons these days, with the news not being the prioirty as that's readily available all the time anyway (for me: Ambrose Evans Pritchard's articles (Telegraph), sport coverage being 90% football (not the Telegraph), Saturday Daily Mail TV & radio guide) but: Its editor Alison Phillips said in February that the newspaper intended to "cover important stories in a balanced way, without telling the reader what to think". Is not going to be one of them. Seem to be uniformly negative comments from all sources I have heard about it in the last couple of days (guardian, reddit, press review). It's been and gone and I've only noticed its demise. The worst (proper) paper I've read recently was the I (the tabloid Independent) which was awful, freebie from a hotel. It read like they'd just taken the first two or three paragraphs out of the Independent for each story, it was annoying that every time I became interested in a story it just ended having only told me a fraction of what I wanted to know. More losses for Trinity Mirror. Ace. And when the Guardian has burnt through its Shaw Trust money (about 7 - 8 years at current rates of burn) then that pustule can vanish as well.
