The Masked Tulip
Everything is sorted. It shouldn't be surprising, but this is a man who seems genuinely to be working in the real world to save his members' jobs. Of course they'll be negotiating hard for sweeteners from government, and be in a very strong position to hold them to ransom. billybong
^ So how much is the buyer prepared to contribute to the £30+ billion cost of the lagoon - or is the lagoon just another energy subsidy paid for by taxpayers and domestic energy consumers. Hectors House
As has been said in this forum and elsewhere the quality of anything the Chinese make is rather dubious, insiders who work in the oil industry are saying there is a big disaster looming because Chinese steel has been used on projects and they can see it starting to fail. Also makes you wonder about the new Forth Road bridge which is made of steel supplied by China. What is going on in Port Talbot is not exclusive, In South Australia, troubled Whyalla steelmaker Arrium has gone into voluntary administration with the company saying it had "no choice" but to take the drastic step to protect investors. The Australians have some big Navy contracts coming up and Australian companies are being by-passed for the "cheaper option" with who is supplying steel, same goes for railway track replacement around Sydney. Back in the UK, HS2 will be using railway track made in China, do you really want to use a high-speed train on a line where the track may fail at any point? workingpoor
I'm not sure that there is any quality differences in steel from China v UK steel. Also there would be British Quality Assurance checks over in China during the manufacturing process.

workingpoor
i know there is low carbon steel / high carbon steel etc etc etc etc no reason why a rolled steel slab from china would be any different to a rolled steel slab from Scunthorpe is there? except maybe when were talking about keeping fat pension schemes going. We had the same thing in shipbuilding now they are building hulls in south korea and fitting them out in the uk Edited April 7, 2016 by workingpoor
workingpoor
Expert: Close Port Talbot plant or face death by a thousand cuts http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-35985397 It may be better to close Tata's steel plant in Port Talbot than for it to face a "death of 1,000 cuts" for a decade, a top business expert has said. Cardiff Business School Prof Calvin Jones also said UK ministers "colluded in the demise" of steel in the EU. He said ministers' priority was to boost consumption with cheaper goods, at the expense of heavy industry. workingpoor
Reading this i'd say that the quality of some British steel could be dubious? Falsified QA docs? That's serious that steel could have been used on some sensitive projects! http://in.mobile.reuters.com/article/idINKCN0X500D?irpc=932 (Reuters) - UK's Serious Fraud Office has initiated a criminal investigation into Tata Steel's (TISC.NS) operations, the Telegraph reported on Thursday. Police officers are investigating charges that Tata Steel's staff in and around its Yorkshire's site, may have faked certificates on the composition of the products before its sale, the newspaper said. Examined documents have affected 500 customers, including BAE (BAES.L) and Rolls-Royce (RR.L), Telegraph said, citing a source. He said ministers' priority was to boost consumption with cheaper goods, at the expense of heavy industry. this actually seems to be one of the more sensible articles on this subject. It is obvious that Tata now just want to walk away from the pension fund and clean up responsibilities. They will be happy to offload to anyone for £1 if they can get out of it. The government are also looking for a short term happy ending, so will throw in a ton of sweeters to help the deal GP through.Though we all know in the end maybe 5 or 10 years down the late the same situation will crop up. This time the company will probably go but with the tax payer footing the bill for the pension fund and cleanup. Why not make Tata pay now? The Masked Tulip
Apparently changing the name from 'TATA' to 'British Steel' will solve all the problems. Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?
