Pay To Stay Social Housing Rents U-Turn

Recommended Posts

Pension changes gone too. Tax credits before that.

All they do is have referendums and campaign to keep things as they are.

Pointless lot.

Even with the Lib Dems in the Coalition they didn't have enough ideas to fill the whole 2010-15 Parliament's time. Now with Labour finally undergoing its painful post-Blair transition we could have a Conservative in Downing Street until 2025. Well, probably there'll be another huge financial crisis before then so that'll keep them busy bailing out banks etc.

As someone who could potentially be affected by this (earn over £40k living in London in HA flat), this is hardly a significant U-turn. They're just talking about tapering it now at £30k as they know many people would just reduce their hours as it would cost people a lot more a month than a private rent.

The problem is there are not enough HA places to go around and this a result of 40 years successive governments sh1t housing policy.

I haven't even told my wife about this 30k thing.

I`ll just wait to see what happens but the wife will be able to keep her hours down.

Unintended consequences innit...

If and when this does affect me, I will do the maths and reduce my hours accordingly. I'm getting close to retirement already. :D

Why not take your £100k discount and buy the place.

The government can't afford to subsidise your rent by a couple of hundred quid a month but can afford to subsidise you by £100k to buy.

This isn't of course about saving money - it's about reducing the social housing stock by forcing people to buy the properties.

Yes well...the wife and I could come up with the £100k to buy.

But the truth is that we may stay together or split up.

Either way it`s ok.

What appears to be a smart move is often something different.

'housing expert Lord Best – have tabled amendments stipulating that social housing tenants spend no more than a third of their earnings on rent.'

And everyone else has to pay market rent even if that means 50% plus of after tax earnings goes on rent. Is this government ever going to actually do anything to make the system fairer? So many U-turns. Truely pathetic.
