The March Of Spam

Recommended Posts

Every online retailer I ever bought anything from, and every job site keeps sending me relentless SPAM to my email and phone. I have "12 unanswered answerphone messages", and I never answer them unless I know the number. Thankyou I already bought a washing machine. It's so good I don't need another one yet.

You need to start clicking on the opt-out link which you can usually find at the bottom of the spam email (only on spam emails from legitimate companies, not on viagra spam of course).

This is why you need two email addresses

A 'buying stuff' email (for logins/passwords)

and a 'talking to real people' email.

Then they can send you all the crap they like and it doesnt matter because you won't be reading that account.

(a possible third category is 'recruiters', as you may sometimes want to read their messages but they will also happily sell your email address to every tinker in town)

Get yourself an ISP where you are mrpin.yourisp.co.uk, so you can have anything@mrpin.yourisp.co.uk route to you.

Then when you do business with anyone who might abuse data protection, create a new alias solely for them. So for example housepricecrash@mrpin.yourisp.co.uk could be an alias to your regular address. Then if you start to get spam through housepricecrash you can just delete that alias without affecting mail from anyone else.

I do that. I have about 60 or 70 live aliases, and I've only had to delete a tiny handful. Most people respect my privacy.

My older addresses, and especially the one that was widely published online before email spam existed, are heavily spam-filtered.

Demon used to do that and I did that very thing. I had an email address for every retailer. Caught a few selling my details on.

Best not to have an email address when buying anything. With those people nothing good ever comes from having one. Possible with the High Street but almost impossible buying online - another good reason for a resurrection of the High Street in the fullness of time. Jobs are unfortunately different of course.

I dare say in time you will have an email address registered at birth - it's all a bit like all the ****** and other ****** that is put through everyone's letter box every day of every year, thousands and thousands of tonnes of it year in year out. Conservation - what a laugh.

******* that just goes unread immediately to the tip.

It's worse than the physical letterbox, and I take just about as much notice of it. All those leaflets for conservatories, pizzas, and sofas just go in my recycling bag, which no doubt comes out of my council tax.

I get spam from muslim singles. You can't opt out via the email you have to log in to their system, Which I can't do as I have no password for it.

I'll bet you'll look good in a hijab, but nothing else. I just wear my "site boots" and nothing else. Actually I play most musical instruments naked. I am currently assembling a saxophone in no clothes!

I was going to say that I get hardly any as I might buy one thing online a year if that. But then I guess Sarah has never bought a muslim single.

I'm on Hotmail and it does efficiently junk everything I get from particular cos if I tell it to.

Sarah should have adopted my old colleague, Mr Islam from India. He has an allotment and likes gardening. He lives in Berkshire. Unfortunatlely for Sarah, he already has a blonde wife! I met her, and she is very clever.

And at their prices I won't! :-p

"i am liberal with some limitation,"

Hmm

It's no good when some of them look like the takeaway delivery driver .. :)

Frank doesn't buy anything online. He knits his underwear from seaweed, and bakes his own beans!

someone has probably used your email for their account, you could just do a password reset then login and change the email to someone else

We're not diverting this into an austerity thread; I just wonder where people who keep buying all this stuff put it.

I imagine you dress better than Mr ToNA, with his £30 a year budget. I bought a washing machine new a few years back. They gave a great service, and I would use them again if I need a kitchen appliance. The thing works smashing, and I won't need another one for some time, so please retailers, light on the spam. It took me two days before I found an email from my sister, informing me my mum had died. Among all those "great offers" about sofas!

Am I the only one who keeps seeing this thread and immediately visualises a vast army of heavily armed spam slices marching in line across the country?

You should have done films! I thought of one years back called "The Pub" but seen through the eyes of an Armitage Shanks porcelain bowl!
