justthisbloke
Doc says I have high cholesterol. The internet threatens all sorts of dire consequences. So, what do I need to do to lower it? And, hasn't the dietary method of lowering it been debunked as a load of VI tosh? It seems very confusing right now - and if I go to the standard sources of advice (NHS etc), I'll just get the standard (superseded?) advice. So I'd rather go to my favourite contrarian economic forum forum for life or death medical info - I'm getting a moderate level of exercise - about 100 miles a week by bike and I've pretty much stopped driving entirely. - I don't drink much booze - I'm a social drinker (and don't do much socialising!) and never drink at home. - Should be getting more fresh air and sunlight now that A. spring is coming, and B. I have no job. - I'm a light/occasional smoker - I guess that's got to go - Apparently, stress is a cause so hopefully joblessness should help. Am also considering looking into meditation. Any other tips welcome!

spyguy
Brisk walk of 30 minutes a day. If you can do one at dinner time and one after tea you'll be laughing. Try going for a vegan diet - at least get shot of red meat and cheese. Stop smoking.

JoeDavola
Watch this all the way through. Watch with an open mind; I don't think he's a quack - he's a world class surgeon: Try it, word for word, for say 6 weeks, then measure your cholestrol afterwards. Turned Out Nice Again
Surely the first question is whether high cholesterol is anything to worry about. Did you get it fractionated into HDL/LDL?

council dweller
What was your cholesterol level ? My Doctor told me that she`d have to put me on statins. I went back a couple of weeks later and she said again your cholesterol level is 5.3....I said no it`s not it exactly 5. (boarder line) She said "oh..." Statins are an enormous cash cow. dgul
Surely the first question is whether high cholesterol is anything to worry about. Did you get it fractionated into HDL/LDL? The evidence says that people who have had heart attacks often have high cholesterol... The entire medical advice is based on this. Including dangerous levels of statins, etc. But the evidence also indicates that people with high cholesterol don't have a higher rate of heart disease than the general population. This inconvenient fact is not factored in enough by the medical profession. I'd say use this as an excuse to sort out your lifestyle and diet - You look better than average, but as KoJ says avoid hydrogenated fats, etc. Personally, I'd say avoid sugar entirely and be careful with any simple carbohydrates - but that is just me... Anyway, I'd say don't devote everything to the cholesterol level, but to just being generally healthier.
whitevanman
Cholesterol is good for you. Check your LDL/HDL ratio which is what matters more. How are your triglycerides and blood sugar? How's your weight? I'm treating my metabolic syndrome by cutting out carbs and eating lots of saturated fat in the form of animal fats like butter, lard and cream. Works for me, I've never felt better or been healthier.
copydude
Doc says I have high cholesterol. The internet threatens all sorts of dire consequences. So, what do I need to do to lower it? And, hasn't the dietary method of lowering it been debunked as a load of VI tosh? It seems very confusing right now - and if I go to the standard sources of advice (NHS etc), I'll just get the standard (superseded?) advice. Everyone has a different metabolism, so there's no 'one size fits all' answer. There are also some hereditary issues in the grey area of 'high blood pressure'. You also do not say what age you are. I did much reading on this subject. Simply, if your blood pressure is ok, then you are ok. Most people in later life take something to manage this. There are blood thinners, like half an aspirin a day. Or if these upset your stomach, try ramipril. Statins reduce cholesterol. And if you want to be sure, maybe you can take clopidogrel, which makes the blood a little less sticky and less likely to clot. In general, these three are the most advised pills by neurologists to avoid a stroke. Again, no two people are the same, so you must take a blood test every now and then to see if your kidneys can cope with the regime. Disclaimer. This is not medical advice, your mileage may vary etc.

sexton
" you do need cholesterol. This soft, waxy substance is found not only in your bloodstream but also in every cell in your body, where it helps to produce cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids that help you digest fat. Cholesterol also helps in the formation of your memories and is vital for neurological function. Your liver makes about three-quarters or more of your body's cholesterol,"

Bossybabe
Take lots of omega 3. Eat a handful of nuts every day. Take Coenzyme Q10. Do NOT take statins. I gave up statins six months ago; it is a calculated risk since I had a stroke 13 years ago and had been on them ever since. My cholesterol is 4.1. But I had serious muscle pain in thighs and upper arms, one of the consequences of long term statins. Now no more muscle pain and feeling much less lethargic. Blood pressure down from around 147/86 to around 137/63. Fingers crossed for the result of last week's fasting lipid test. ?

adamLancs
Post heart-attack my dad's surgeon made a point that it was probably the smoking, despite high cholesterol. Smoking, he was very clear, was far ahead of all the other factors. I imagine, having seen and navigated the plumbing of some hundreds possibly thousands of people, gives you a better picture than most to give such advice. It was duly noted, and he's been giving up ever since.
