Death By Falling Meteorite

Recommended Posts

First ever recorded case in history apparently, what's the odds on that?

I contest the bus driver's claim to a place in the record books..

In 1954 a woman was hit by a meteorite that crashed through her roof. Her relatives claimed that her death years later was due to the Press 'frenzy' that surrounded the incident. A simple country woman, she '' never did recover" said those close to her.

Like Princess Di, another victim of the media....

How else would a piano fall ?

The meteorite strike.. was previously blamed on the detonation of explosives that were accidentally left behind during the construction of the college.

How odd.

The same rate as everything else according to that Italian bloke.

Easy to calculate. You can either approximate the odds in terms of the number of humans who have ever lived or, you could calculate it in terms of time. Here you could say 'time' began with the Big Bang but more challengingly we could calculate using the time that may have existed before the Big Bang.

and more interestingly, how much time is there after now?

You can work that out probabilistically. V interesting https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_argument

Also look up the German Tank Problem from WWII. The allies captured a few of the Germans latest snazzy tank and got the serial numbers. The problem was to work out how many of these dangerous machines are out there, but the only Intel was the captured serial numbers of a few.

NASA have weighed in on this and discredited the claim. Apparently there is a 'compensation' element here. Ahem...

It seems to me that the role of NASA these days is to simply deny anything that happens

Apparently the role of NASA, with it's near misses and heroic failures, is to make space travel look hard. When in reality it's trivially easy, apparently.

Hmm, calculate number of square metres of land (x), number of meteor strikes per year on land (y) (presume each one hits a sq m of land). At any given moment in time the sq m of land I occupy has a y/x chance of being hit.

What if you are on a boat in the sea?
