Rhodes Will Stay

It's a real shame this took so long and did so much damage to the college. They should have told the tw4ts protesting that if they didn't like Rhodes they were welcome to hand back their bursaries and f*ck right off.

Nothing like the academic gravy train hitting the financial buffers to concentrate minds.

In fact there is an argument for bulldozing all Oxford and Cambridge colleges into the ground. It has nothing to do with colonialism and great deal to do with the way these institutions have underpinned the British class system for centuries. Of course, none of the gobshites in RMF are proposing anything as radical as that because for all their posturing they are riding the Oxbridge privilege train to places in the social and economic elite along with everyone else.

Hypocrites all.

I thought this was going to be about Jordan Rhodes remaining at Blackburn Rovers through the January transfer window.

Purely down to money in the end.

Who'd have thought it?

I doubt it (may have been for a few, but not in general).

Demolition of a statue because it represents something unacceptable would've been exactly the same as the Taliban demolishing the Bamiyan Buddhas. Or the queen's grandson wanting to destroy the royal ivory.

The specific reason for Oriel not caving in to the loons was not strength of moral argument but donors pulling, and threatening to pull, their money from Oriel and Oxford.

Hence debate closed.

A nice bit of real world education for them. Education costs money.

Worrying though.

What happens when a bunch of obese feminists say Nelson's Column is a phallic patriarchal fat shaming microaggression?

There's no donors for that.

Expect to see it replaced by a statue of an obese woman eating chicken from a bucket.

I see there will be additional "historical lefty revisionist claptrap" posted next to the statue and his digs. Hopefully they'll do similar for Karl Marx, pointing out that Marxism has been responsible for the deaths of over 100 million people in the 20th century.

How long are left wingers and minorities going to bang on about the slave trade.

It was abolished 183 years ago in the U.K.

They never focus on the great engineering achievements of the British Empire of which many former colonies benefit from economically today.

Bad things happened to my family in Poland during the war but I don't expect the Germans of today to feel responsible.

Will Oxford SU also be campaigning to remove the following statue.
Yes he did many good things later but his career and success was founded upon inciting and carrying out violent attacks on people based on ethnicity.
So if that condemned Mr Rhodes it condemns Mandela as well.

How typical of the left to be so choosy....

Not entirely fair. They consulted, and people said firmly No. Those donors - their alumni - are the wider membership of the college.

I suspect the college management knew very well what the outcome would be. The Taliban were a small minority.

So, the people who want the statue removed, object to a man who made great wealth from racist and imperialist activities. And funded a university college, meaning that all it's future students necessarily also benefited from the fruits of his racist and imperialist activities.

Which the students are happy to continue to benefit from, but would prefer to remove the statue that reminds them of this embarrasing fact.

You do them a disservice. They also want to destroy the societies blighted by these imperialist activities to demonstrate that no good should ever come from them.

Was he more of a colonialist than Augustus or Julius Caesar?

They have months named after them that should probably be banned.

Ultimately just a frontman/sheeple distraction figure for a well known banking dynasty - same old sh1t different centuries.

It is wrong to destroy things from the past that have gone out of fashion, like "Tintin in the Congo". There's something 1984, Isis, or Stalinist about it.
