Work As Property Caretaker

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any experience of taking care of a property, especially rural and in isolated places? I mean, being a caretaker of a place, whether it is just to guard or take care of animals/the place in the owner's absence? Usually rent-free but in return for security/upkeep services.

I have a book to write over the coming year (no doubt, two years default_wacko.png) and the perfect solution for me would be to find a place where I could guard/keep up/look after a property for someone in their absence. To be honest, anywhere (in Europe) would be fine for me.

I would like to offer my services, as I am mobile, fit and have good references, but I have not found any good sites, except "Home Carers". Any suggestions, experience or anecdotes?

Try Punch Taverns or Enterprise Inns,a mate's brother use to arrange/find paid caretakers for their empty pub`s usually in rural areas not sure which one it was but pretty sure it was one of them (the pay was pretty poor but all the energy cost`s were free)

Your main job would be preventing gypsies nicking the pluming and the slates of the roof :D

Isn't this market now cornered by property "guardian" businesses, like Camelot? It's a clever businesses model: they charge the owners to provide someone to look after empty buildings (and especially to stop squatters from moving in) and then they charge you a (pretty low) rent to live there on a licence.

I guess I'm doing it at the moment, (not rural though). My mates Mum died, they inherited, didn't do anything whatsover with the house for 7 years (Mums shopping bags still on the bed etc etc) and I just happened to moan about London renting at the right time. We struck a deal where I sorted the house clearance, re-decorated and got the house more habitable/maintained it etc, in exchange for paying the bills and v.low rent. I admit that is stupidly lucky, but when the day comes I have to move out, then I wouldn't hesitate to be cheeky and find out who owned any obviously empty properties, or ask around.

If you can go anywhere in Europe, and have any sort of smallish budget, then I wouldn't bother with the UK at all (this was a very quick search) but you could rent this in Brittanny for £395pm (discount for long term), stone cottage, great garden view and plenty of peace conducive to writing. Too big for one person, and I'm sure there's stuff way cheaper, but you get the idea.
