Been offline now for nearly 24 hours. A software update gone wrong? Hacked?

HSBC haven't been forthcoming over what the problem is. Have HSBC cut costs by sub-contracting out the IT infrastructure?

Its been down for me since the thirty first, I'm supposed to pay myself at the end of every month and haven't been able to do so yet, good job I don't have a VAT bill due.

Must be a s/w update - mobile banking still working fine.

Edit: Apparently this was down yesterday as well, but now restored. Small comfort that I'm a net debtor with them....

It was on first thing yesterday morning (no problems for me at New Year) and about 10.30pm last night but it is still off for me (website version). Apparently the app was working but I don't have a smartphone.

Pretty crap performance from such a massive bank. Maybe they haven't been investing in their IT resiliency and staff training.

I would guess either a software update issue as FreeFall says or DDoS.

Doesn't actually affect me as I pay everything DD or SO but I do like to check my transactions every couple of days.

EDIT - From HSBC Tweet

@geekboy75 The issues we are experiencing are not related to a cyber-attack, but we are working hard to restore the Online Banking (1/2)^SW

That's actually one of the few accepted excuses by HMRC. I've used it before. :)
