legislation to reuse 'zombie' properties to house homeless veterans

U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, on Dec. 15, co-sponsored legislation Rep. Steve Israel, D-Long Island, introduced Nov. 11 to establish a three-year experimental program to renovate "zombie" homes and reuse them for housing for homeless veterans, according to the Library of Congress government information web site.

The legislation would provide $25 million in federal funding over three years for grants to veterans service organizations, homeless housing providers and charitable organizations to buy abandoned houses in the foreclosure process from banks, renovate the properties, and resell the properties to homeless veterans.

A "zombie" home is a home in the foreclosure process that neither the lender or the owner is maintaining.

Qualified applicants could receive up to $1 million each in federal funding during the three-year program to evaluate the feasibility of the concept.

The program would have a dual focus on community revitalization and homelessness, Israel said in a press release.

"Whenever we get the opportunity to eliminate two problems with one sustainable solution, we should act on it," he said.

The legislation -- HR 3970 -- had 14 co-sponsors, as of Tuesday -- 11 Democrats and 3 Republicans.

Where are all the abandoned foreclosed properties in the UK?

I remeber one on the south circular that basically rotted away over 15 years or so..... I heard it was an inheritance dispute, so not 'abandoned', but same issue of underutilised properties,
