Well they head institutions with budgets of hundreds of millions it's only fair that they should help themselves to an appropriate amount to line their pockets. And of course all this helps them to bid up each others wages a nice little club if you can get into it.

There's quite a lot of academic bods on this forum, how does the governance structure in these institutions work? Or is everyone generally overpaid so everyone keeps quiet?

Top management get top dollar, everyone else has had near zero pay increases meaning erosion in real terms over last 6 years or so.

Massive lack of transparency at prof level and above. Lots of informal bargaining which means the weaker the management, the more likely the system results in the 'loudest' voices getting heard
