The Masked Tulip

What Is Going On With Athletics? A Cycling Moment?

Recommended Posts

Apparently there is going to be some report published today which, allegedly, may show widespread corruption in the sport and allegations of drug taking amongst well known names?

This seems to have come out of the blue?

The athletics worlds is supposedly on a knife-edge waiting for this report. Some of the allegations and investigation allegedly involve London 2012.

Fascinating.

What makes you say that? Athletics haven't really taken drug taking seriously. We had Seb Coe ranting and raving earlier in the year when someone even dared mention there might be a drug problem.

Not surprising. It's very hard to believe that cycling is the only sport with widespread doping and cheating.

As far as I can recall the list of athletes from Operation Puerto included many well known tennis and football players (allegedly). Yet only the names of the cyclists on that list were ever released.

They're all at; from the boost to help their training after getting injured to the full blown Ben Johnson.

Drug free athletes exist outside the big-earners, but when a gold medal means sponsorship and advertising cash will set you up for life then you'll do it.

Isn't it just another element of the campaign to isolate Russia?

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/nov/08/russia-expulsion-doping-report-iaaf

Pressure is expected to grow for Russia to be expelled from world athletics after the publication of a key independent doping report in Geneva on Monday.

<Snip>

But the main focus of the report is expected to be on the allegations of systemic doping in Russia and associated claims of cover-up and corruption

Isn't there some British athelete who took drugs, who was found out and banned for years and then when he tried to get back into the sport loads of other UK athletes spoke out against him. Just wondering whether he might have some kind of last laugh re this report.

After the 2012 London games, pro Olympic trolls infested many football forums declaring the moral and reputable high ground. How we laugh now.

Lance Armstrong is the tip of the iceberg.

Are there clean athletes, or just those who haven't been caught? Just legalise the doping and level the playing field.

Tempted to say the same or do what the body builders do. Have a clean contest and a drug enhanced contest.

The only problem is that I can see some vulnerable people (eg younger teens) being forced to take drugs to enhance their performance without being fully aware of any longer term consequences.

Good idea. The old professional and amateur distinction updated for the modern world.

Doping is dangerous though. Haven't a lot of cyclists died due to doping? (heart attacks in their thirties)

Pocketing bribes? Load of bull!

I don't like the word "bribe"! Think of it more as a "bonus".

Secondly, being global events, you are by definition letting in a lot of dubious characters into key posiitons from a lot of 3rd world nations who are completely inept at carrying out corruption, unlike our guys. ;)

I was thinking the same thing this morning.

Lots of corrupt people from third world countries seem to want the cash in a bank so they end up getting a cheque deposited in a Swiss, Cayman Islands, etc, etc, bank account in their name.

There clearly is money to be made in offering advice on how to set yourself up as a limited corporation offering consultancy services or how to get yourself appointed to several lucrative part-time QUANGO posts.

Get a million deposited in your Swiss bank account and you must be corrupt? Get a million paid to your consultancy services company where you attend one half hour meeting per month and, voila, you are a legit highly paid consultant.

You'll have Tony Blair's lawyers on to Fubra if you keep saying things like that.

Even if you could ensure that it was entirely free choice to take performance enhancing substances, you'd still have the problem of policing the clean contest as well. Where there's money, there's cheating - several "natural" bodybuilders have been caught out because whilst they aren't going to win Mr. Olympia, there's plenty of cash to be earned in advertising, modelling, and social media - and that puts pressure on them to look good all year round.

IMO the only option is to try harder to police clean competition, as impossible as it might seem.

They are claiming that Russian athletics is dodgy and that the Russians should be banned from competing until they clean up their act. Say that it affected the London games.

No individual names have been mentioned and, from what I have heard, no mention of anywhere else other than Russia.

Lots of names in the full report - https://wada-main-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/files/wada_independent_commission_report_1_en.pdf
