Michelin Axes 800 Jobs At Ballymena

Recommended Posts

Never mind, because the financial sector is making up the slack!! Nevermind that ordinary people are losing their jobs and being recycled into the workforce on zero-hour / temp / self-employment cup-cake selling jobs.

The workers all need to use their redundancy to import containers of tyres from China.Use their knowledge of the sizes/grades etc. Then flog them online undercutting their old employer.

I bought some new Michelin winter tyres yesterday as it happens, I was surprised to see that if needed I could get a set of 4 Michelin Energy Saver summer tyres for about 120 quid fitted at Costco, an absolute steal in my view. Under an identical offer last year(buy 4 get 50 pounds off) I paid about 145 which I considered to be a very good price as it was a tenner or so less in nominal terms than what was paid in 2009 for the set before that.

The winters came in at 170 fitted for 4 which I think is also very good value to be honest.

Don't know why Michelin are struggling as they seem to have previously been able to hike prices, have they been facing stiffer competition?

Wonder if the apparent practice of tyre companies providing wide, low profile tyres for big alloys at a deep discount to car manufacturers is ultimately flawed as come replacement time it's a pretty easy decision for many to avoid spending 500+ on 4 tyres and look for some cheapo replacements instead. I wouldn't describe it as a wise decision to put crap tyres on your car but the premium brand replacement costs can be comedy, I expect much of any fuel savings moving to a more efficient newer car have been swallowed in increased tyre costs instead.

Parallels with printers and replacement cartridge costs?

Edit article says truck tyre demand is low, SNACR's input would be good!

Right, I don't choose cars with low profile alloys as you can get a pinch puncher, and like you say the replacement tyre price is a joke. Some fitters also won't stock uncommon sizes so you might have to wait until the next day, great if you need the car next day . Stick with the stock wheels I say - but you won't get any street cred, and you won't pick up girls as easily (as if you would).
