Shameless Tories Spend Millions On Swedish Steel While British Plants Left To Rot

Recommended Posts

Furious Shadow Defence minister Kevan Jones blasted the Conservatives for “turning their back on British jobs and industry”

The revelation comes as Britain’s once-mighty steel industry is battered by closures and redundancies.

The two contracts signed by the Government are worth almost £3.9billion in total.

One is a £348million deal for three new Royal Navy ships, the second is a £3.5billion order for 589 Ajax armoured vehicles. [more at link]

"Under European and UK procurement regulations, the Ministry of Defence could not contractually mandate the use of particular suppliers."

sad but true even if we wanted to 'buy British'

and being in the EU is oversold as such a good idea!

did not click on the Mirror link (biased economical with the truth) - shudder - but googled the rules anyway.

I think it's been widely reported in the press (but not the Mirror) China dump into other Asian countries, and their output ripples through into other countries, with much European steel being exported to the UK due to the relatively strong pound (I hate typing that, its not strong if you look at any long term value).

Haven't clicked the link either, but no doubt the Mirrors usual rubbish.

Contracts probably singed years ago £3.5 is not the cost of steel it`s the full cost of vehicles ,my money would be on some/most off the steel for these vehicles will be from TATA as they have been the main supplier of armored plate/ strip for such vehicles world wide

Very poor reporting even by the DM`s standards

I want to know where the steel is coming from for the UK's new Arctic Research Ship to be built at Camel Lairds and more importantly where is the Labour coming from?

Must have put in a real lowball bid to secure the work.
