Failed tour firm axes Santa trips

Hundreds of families have waved goodbye to Santa visits

A leading provider of Christmas tours to visit Santa Claus has been forced to call in the administrators.

Following Nortours' collapse 500 bookings made by families hoping to visit Santa have been called off.

Administrators PKF blamed the "general economic downturn" for the London-based firm's predicament as well as rising competition from the internet.

The company's 12 employees will lose their jobs, PKF added. Nortours had an average annual turnover of £9m.

Sad tidings

"Christmas is an awful time for any business to go into administration and the nature of Nortours's product - Santa Claus tours - makes this administration all the more upsetting not only for the staff, but also for the families who will have been expecting to fly off to visit Santa in the next few days," said PKF head of corporate recovery Philip Long.

"Ongoing high interest rates are making consumers think twice about spending, and traditional high-end tour operators such as Nortours are finding it impossible to cope with the low number of bookings being made."

The company - which organises "Santa Claus tours" to Scandinavia and the Baltic region - will be placed into administration on Friday, bringing more than 30 years of history to an end.
