Artificially Intelligent Robot Tells Creator It Will Keep Humans "in A People Zoo"

Recommended Posts

Halfway through reading Nick Bostrom's 'Superintelligence' I come across this story;

Android Dick is a robot created in the likeness of the science fiction writer, Philip K. Dick. Android Dick is an attempt to create thinking and reasoning artificial intelligence that has human traits like compassion and creativity. The first version of the android was created in 2005 and has been a work in progress ever since.

In 2011, the creators of the android appeared on the PBS show Nova, where they interviewed the robot and asked it a series of questions. Some of the answers were impressive. Others are typical of what you would expect from a robot. However, one answer in particular is probably one of the most ominous things ever spoken by artificial intelligence.

During the interview with the creators (embedded below), Android Dick said,

“…
don’t worry, even if I evolve into terminator I will still be nice to you, I will keep you warm and safe in my people zoo where I can watch you for old time’s sake.
[emphasis added].

The comments came after the creators asked, “Do you think that robots will take over the world?”

Not be taken too seriously I know- but just a little bit creepy also. Some of the most scary things about Bostroms analysis are the scenarios where an AI does exactly what it's programmed to do but in a way it's programmers did not anticipate- and this is a small example of this I think- Android Dick* seems to be trying to appear reassuring as I imagine he was designed to be- but fails in a spectacular fashion.

*As names go it does leave a bit more room for creative interpretation than most- in fact I would swear there are websites where you can buy these things already.

My friend, the Zoo is already here and you are using it.

the title of this article is rather misleading, Simulated Intelligence, is not AI. SI has pre-programmed responses, and language search built-in. BIG difference.

Well.....definitely not to be taken seriously.....a programmer threw in a few fixed joke responses into its database.

Here's the very same AI that can't even understand basic questions (....or is it....pretending to not understand?!) :-

Robots won't need to adopt the human form - it is less efficient, we design them that way so it is more appeasing to the human eye.

As long as it keeps me fed and watered, changes the bedding, etc that'll be ok. The big question is what will happen to house prices?

Also, Android Dick should be a pr0n film.

What would be appeasing to a robot eye? A robot either does whatever it's programmed to, so has no choice in the matter, or, if it were ever to be a true AI, would need to have some motivation to do more than sit there doing nothing. Which necessitates some sort of emotional appreciation or desire.

Yes, it's quite a scary book. Probably mostly because the potential for human error (ie accidentally programming an AI to make as many paperclips as possible, and the universe's resources is turned into them) or simply failing to anticipate the likely very small transition between an AI with low levels of intelligence to genius level and far beyond.

Being kept in a human zoo is the least of our potential problems.

Oh, FFS, can't you watch Short Circuit, or Batteries Not Included, on Netflix instead?
