Two sisters who have been told they will be repeatedly gang-raped as a “punishment” for the crimes committed by their brother have pleaded with the Supreme Court to be protected.

The pair fled their village after an all-male council "ruled" that they should be raped, have their faces blackened and then be paraded naked because the brother eloped with a married woman from a higher caste.

The council called this an eye-for-eye form of justice.

Amnesty International, who are running a petition for the girls' protection, said: "Unelected village councils such as this are widespread in parts of India. More often than not they are made up of older men from dominant castes, who prescribe rules for social behaviour and interaction in villages."

Meenakshi Kumari, who is 23, is petitioning for protection from India's highest court for herself and her 15-year-old sister and family, who are the lowest caste in India - Dalit, or Untouchables.

Utterly mental.

If white people were doing this to non-white skinned people there would be a media outcry, there would be marches through London of thousands no doubt led by the likes of Corbyn, Abbot et al the usual suspects... and calls for boycotts of goods, embargoes of trade, etc.

But becuase it is non-white people doing this then.... almost silence.

Maybe that clown who rans Kids Co should go to India and set up a charity there to help people who are genuinely in need rather than being short of money to meet their drug debts.

She should work for no salary and take Alan Yentob with her.

What nonsense. It made the news all around the globe, that's anything but 'almost silence'.

It has made the news - now let's wait to see when the usual suspects start their marches to ban Indians from travelling globally, from doing trade with India, etc, etc in exactly the same way that the usual suspects, rightly, demanded a boycott on South Africa.

Hypocrites.

The caste system in India is just as horrific as apatheid but the trendy left turn a blind eye to it.

Don't disagree with you. And look now at how young White South Africans are being discriminated against by affirmative action, even though the sins of the past were committed by their forefathers and they now have to pay for it.

Mind you, you won't find the lefties complaining about this, no sireee. Hypocrites indeed!

I know that "lefties" are supposedly responsible for all the evil in the world but before the 2015 general election the Conservatives pledged to repeal the law that makes it illegal to discriminate on basis of caste in the UK if they won a majority.

Which is worse, turning a blind eye to the caste system in somebody else's country or actively enabling it in your own country?

I am certain the BBC were telling me this week that India was going to be the world's saviour now that China looks a bit ******ed. They never mentioned this type of thing.

Strange.

Strange.

Does the BBC mention school shootings and incarceration rates of black men every time they run an article about the US economy? If not this is clear evidence of a pro-US trendy lefty conspiracy.

Just saying there is a very clear India 'love in' at the moment in the BBC.

Let us hope these strange attidudes dies out. A colleague I met in India (educated chap) told me he is the first one of his family to marry into a different caste. his wife is some sort of "landlord" caste (boo!), and he is from some sort of "brewing" caste (hooray!).

He is immensely proud of his daughter, who is doing well at school. Obviously these are "posh" Indians, and there are very backward parts of India.
