Off licence group Unwins in fight for survival

The directors of Unwins Wine Group and Unwins Limited are battling to secure the future of the eponymous off-licence business after applying to have the two companies placed in administration.

The run-up to Christmas is usually a boom time for off-licences but increasing dominance of supermarket chains in retailing beer and wine has put pressure on the independent off-licence sector.

The private equity-owned Unwins operation is one of the UK's biggest off-licence chains and owns about 380 branches and claims to be the largest operator of off-licences in south-east England, employing about 2,000 people.
