Cheaper To Commute From Barcelona Than Rent In London?

Recommended Posts

Hardly feasible for most of us, but this man did it (maybe just for publicity?)

http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/man-saves-cash-commuting-to-work-from-barcelona-to-london/story-fnndib5x-1227472393028

At least it helps illuminate the crazy cost of accommodation now in London.

Indeed, publicity - to say that 5.5h one leg journey, i.e. 11h return has led to vastly improved lifestyle... one has got to be "special" to get a kick out of that.

The main thing this is telling us is how massively out of kilter, everything that is wrong with our internal transport systems in the UK.......when it is cheaper to fly to Europe than catch a train or plane from a few miles down the road in our own country......our transport services are extortionate.

"The average price of a one-bed flat in north London at the time was $3195 a month"

WTF? That's a third more than I pay for a two bed house in Dulwich. Utter cobblers.

Guess it was AUD... given an Australian website. At the current exchange, that would be close to GBP 1,500.

Added a link to the Northants thread today, someone just listed a 4 bed house at a 2007+40% price.

It's probably cheaper for people in Northampton to commute from Spain too !!!!

It's gone seriously mental.

Which is the same as my two-bed house.

By 'north London' they can only mean Farringdon, and even there there's plenty available for less:

Poppycock.

Sure... the msg is there. Let alone that 10h extra journey a day would be worth how much? A lot to any normal human..

From what I've read he only makes the journey a couple of times a month. In other words, he has a holiday flat in Spain. Or he lives in Spain and sometimes has business meetings in London. Either way, he's not commuting.

In the earlier article published in the Standard I recall the comparisson was based on a flat in Camdem. He could have halved his rent by moving 10 miles out in any direction.

He works for: http://traackr.com/team/

Twitter https://twitter.com/sam_cookney

I am sure people on HPC can find out more as they have more time...

This is his blog https://samcookney83.wordpress.com that leads to another blog about this commute https://bestburgerinnorthwestlondon.wordpress.com/2013/10/24/cheaper-to-rent-in-barcelona-and-commute-to-london/

If you are self employed on the internet then you can live anywhere. BUT for someone else's business - you will have to commute. See the other thread about San Francisco youngsters paying $1000 for a bed in this tech boom.

I know of someone who commutes to London from Leeds, via Leeds/Bradford airport. Might make more sense than living in another country (though some would say Yorkshire is) :)

Yes because Stansted airport is right in the centre of London

is n't it.

Alternatively he could have just rented a place in Essex and commuted by train like everyone else.

Stansted, the Barcelona of Essex.

A clear example of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

What a waste of a life.

Leave London career would have been my first solution to the problem.
