Yeah, all the tweets have been deleted and he's not posted anything on that thread since yesterday. I bet all the 'members' who gave him a hundred quid and only got a few days of deranged tweeting in return are thrilled.

Oh look, it really is a protection racket.

Pay up, or you’ll be out on the streets...

The only people who are threatening eviction are landlords. They’re the only people who will be responsible if it happens.

They chose to interpose themselves between people who needed houses and the houses they needed.

If they can’t afford not to evict then they were, at best, reckless and irresponsible.

If they just don’t care, they’re psychopaths.  Given the attempt at blame shifting, I’m going with the latter.

If you watch last night's panorama, you'll see that the landlords evicting are the council.

One of the old fellas being booted out [probably leading to his death] admitted he was no good with money and unable to handle getting a lump sum and making sure his rent was paid due to MH.

But they are [very tragic] extreme cases the BBC were using for their political pocerty porn IMO.

Easy solution for the guys on that film who are unlikely to work again much/at all is for one branch of gov [DWP] to pay the other branch of goc [council] the rent direct and avoid the eviction.

One of the problems is that the opposition [Corbyn - Labour] more interested in scoring points ranting about the nasty party than pushing to get the details [of peoples lives] fixed. Tory boys and girls are of course guilty for implementing it this way.

No doubt people have died and more will follow. NEITHER SIDE cares and the medja in the middle only wants to make poverty porn. Sad UK.

It's hard to know what to do for them. Housing association run blocks of studio flats? They'd end up being insecure nests of crime. Sure isn't fair to subsidise they lifestyle of the feckless for the sake of it though.

There is a certain fraction of the adult population who wouldn't be able to keep a household running (bills paid, food on the table) no matter how much money was coming in. It's not a big fraction but it does exist and it often overlaps with people with medical conditions. One reasonable option would be sheltered housing where people have their own space but the accommodation comes with staff whose job it is to keep an eye on the residents.

The vast majority of people on UC don't fall into this category though, they are functioning adults who just don't have any money.

The issue of whether KB liked a tweet and whether she has already concluded that the Alliance is a waste of space (which she has) is a key issue. Her Bill targets the SRS as well as the PRS and in doing so serves to highlight the fact that the SRS isn't the wonderful, safe sector that most officials like to promote. She could have been a very useful person to engage with, but Larry's spurious claims on Twitter have closed down any possibility of professional dialogue with the Alliance. Landlords also need to find a route into professional dialogue with Shelter (whose attacks on the PRS are ridiculously misguided) but, once again, tweeting silly comments about the CEO's salary, or how much they raise from their second hand shops will have closed down that avenue for the Alliance too. I despair

I am really happy to see such great news.  Can't say it I didn't expect NLA to fail but I certainly didn't expect it to fail so quickly.

Many people on this site, including myself, complain a lot about BTL but do little in practice (other than staying out of the market and ranting here) to stop the BTL.  The "CEO" of the NLA, however, not only managed to give some really bad publicity to landlords but has also taken money from them to do it!

I appreciate his efforts and really hope they don't just give up but start another similar association.  With someone more stable at the helm, an academic landlord perhaps?

"Liked" on behalf of the Alliance a tweet by the IDF .. pardon my language but …... .WTF ? Well there were people on this site who had reservations and I tip my hat to their intuition. IMHO Larry Sweeney is the last person to be playing lead in such a role. He is making an incompetent amateur look professional; Super glad I never pledged.

In today's edition of shouting at the wall (which has also given up listening).

They want Section 8 to be reformed without any reason except it costs landlords money and takes time

https://www.property118.com/urgent-need-review-section-8/

They want to be paid housing benefit directly as they aren't seeing the money. If Mike Roberts is reading this the explanation of what has happened is included in my post above and your tenants really have two options - either ask you to forgive a months rent or stop paying until evicted and save up enough (3 months benefit kept in their own pocket rather than paying you) to have enough to move elsewhere.

My cousin was in a block of flats, owned by an idiot BTLer.

LL went bust, LPA took over the flats and, to my knowledge, still have them,

As soon as the agent contcted the other tenants, saying the LL was bust/in trouble, they all stopped paying their rent, saving their rent for the next place.

In a lot of places where the IO BTL loons are present, theres a lot more property thean there are good tenants.

None of my cousins blockmates had issues getting another place.

A bad refence for LL X a ysaing 'tenant Z did not pay me rent coutns for nothign when that tenant can put up 2 months rent to LL Y, whos had an empty flat for 3 months.

And, as wise lawyer told me, there's no point suing someone with no money.

The moral? Tenants appear to be smarter, money wise and more adatable than idiot IO BTL slumlords

That's the thing with the switch over to Universal credit - payments move from in advance to in arrears so anyone moving over without savings is going to end up with problems paying rent,

Hence my comment that the best thing to do is to accept you are a month down or watch your tenant disappear in 5 months time once the courts get round to doing things.

Thanks for your very clear explanations.  It's easy to understand why many tenants on benefits are struggling with this change.  They are probably on a very tight budget, and unlikely to have any cash savings as a buffer to fall back on when their cash flow is disrupted like this.

But what about the BTL landlords?  Faced with a similar disruption to their cash flow (rents now being received at the end of the month instead of the beginning, while their mortgage payment date remains the same), why are they complaining so loudly?  After all, these people are business entrepreneurs, elite financial folk.  Aren't they able to cope with it? Don't they have any significant cash savings as a buffer either?  Surely they haven't been spending all of their income as soon as it is received?  They're the crème de la brulee of the country's business people, after all.

Oh for heaven's sake Larry - sigh. You know who Giles Peaker is so why are you asking weird questions? For those who don't know, he is a partner with Anthony Gold Solicitors, writer of the Nearly Legal blog (and tweets) and co author of Karen Buck's private members bill.

Now, I can understand why Larry might not know who Giles Peaker is.  But none other than James Fraser has weighed in along similar cheaply insulting lines:

John McKay. I wonder why that interminable bore Peaker has stopped replying? He seemed so keen to jump in earlier. One might almost think he doesn’t do any actual work judging by the amount of time he spends laying into landlords on every available platform.

You'd think someone as politically well-connected as Fraser would be more aware, and more careful with his words.  And as he describes himself as a "professional landlord" [1] , and spends much time promoting landlord interests on every available platform, people could readily believe that he "doesn't do any actual work", either.

It does have some consistency with comparing attacks on landlords to the Holocaust....

Axe the Tenant Tax are spitting blood! LOL!

Axe the Tenant Tax

A VITAL MESSAGE FOR GENERATION RENT...
Have you read the latest report from Generation Rent? Link below.

Any report that does not factor in the impact that mortgage lending, house prices, interest rates, government funded incentives, shared ownership, net migration, Brexit and the myriad of other contributing factors that all impact the housing market would be laughable, if it wasn’t so damaging.

..

They link to

WHAT HAPPENS TO RENTS IF LANDLORDS EXIT THE MARKET? NOTHING.

a report from Generation Rent with evidence, unlike Ros' Ranty reports.

The inclusion of this clear graphic has pushed "Axe The Tenant Tax" over the edge!

Yes but many generation rent people like the flexibility of making a landlord wealthy. So we need more rental houses in this new flexible world.

Or something like that.....boiling quite literally blood etc.?

Love the maths and pictorial representation....still a bit too complicated for a 118’er though.

They will eventually learn that Generation Rent's view is of course 100% correct. Houses do not disappear when sold and are incredibly expensive to leave empty for any length of time when you have mortgage payments to make. What they probably haven't cottoned on to yet is that the percentage who will be switching from renting to OO really can't afford current prices (or they'd have bought already). Losing their "businesses" might soon be the least of their worries...

Corrected.

(The price of leaving them empty without a mortgage has been transferred onto later generations via subsidies like winter fuel allowance, non means tested pensioners benefits of various kinds)
