Selling Gold Jewellery

Recommended Posts

The missus has some gold jewellery to sell, its all 18ct. Locally, in France, we can get 12 euros/gramme (after tax) for that. It seems a long way off the 27e/g the spot price for 18ct. Anyone got any ideas if it is possible to get a better price or is that reasonable?

Have a look at Hatton Garden Metals. I thought of selling mine a while ago and they seemed to give the best deal - can't be sure it's still the same, though.

Prices for scrap gold do vary enormously.

Edit for typo.

Thanks for the replies. I've done some more research and there is a huge variation in the "margin" taken by dealers from around 15% of the spot price to 60 to 70%! I even found a foundry who would pay 12% of the spot price, which is pretty reasonable. The other thing less scrupulous shops will cheat on is weight - 9.2 grammes weighed as 9 grammes and quality. 18 carat counted as 9 carat despite marks saying otherwise. All very interesting.

Umm, yes. Those who value 18 carat at the price of 9 carat are what we in the trade refer to as "crooks".

I agree about Hatton Garden Metals. Easily the most reliable.
