En Route To Biarritz - Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

We're driving down to Biarritz from Roscoff next month and we have a 1 night stopover near La Rochelle on the way down and 2 nights somewhere else on the way back up.

Ideally on the return leg, we'd stay somewhere within 3 or 4 hours of Roscoff, so maybe La Rochelle again (as the stop over on the way down is going to be brief) - anyone been there? worth a visit? anywhere else you'd recommend within this sort of radius?

Merci!

Depends what your tastes are I suppose. Lots of beachy type resorts near La Rochelle along the Vendee coast. Sable D'Olonne to the North or Royan to the south.

Else divert inland along Dordogne? Although most of the interesting towns are probably further East along Dordogne, some pretty little wine growing villages like St. Emilion near Bordeaux.

Else go further north still and you're within reach of Southern Brittany resorts like Benodet (probably a bit far if you want to have an overnight in La Rochelle area) or even North Brittany coast just to the east of Roscoff itself. But you'd presumably want to just hit the ferry by the time you're this close to home.

Or maybe you could pick a Chateau on the Loire since you're going to cross it at some point on the journey. Lots to choose from around Tours. Maybe a little too far east though.

Rennes has an impressive cathedral & is probably close to your route. Again really depends on one's tastes, kids, schedule etc.

U-Boat pens at Lorient, if that sort of thing interests you.

He might want to stay married though Bruce
