Police Press-Ganged Cinema Viewers To Fight Nuclear Incident (Windscale)

Recommended Posts

Just shows we are all disposable slaves according to the state....

(emphasis added) — Tom Tuohy, deputy manager at Windscale plutonium production plant (at 8:00 in): “We were trying to push the burning fuel into the back of the reactor.” — But the heat had melted the cartridges, so they were stuck in the core… Radiation was so intense they could only work a few hours. They were running out of firefighters. — Neville Ramsden, Windscale health physicist: “The police from the [plutonium] factory had turned up looking for volunteers and they brought a bus. They decided the best way to get the volunteers was to go up to the cinema, and ‘volunteer’ the back 2 rows at the show to go… push the fuel rods out of the reactor.”

About 8 mins in.

Weren't they the rows for young people reserved for snogging?

They obviously wanted fit, young men, who were at least sober, that's why they didn't try the local pub.

I watched that tonight. Very interesting, thankyou.

Another disaster to lay at Churchill's feet (after Gallipolli, the Black and Tan atrocities in Ireland, the Great Depression by going back on the pre war gold standard, the Second World War by declaring war on Germany and the total collapse of the British Empire as a weakened Britain was put to the sword economically by America).

I remembered seeing this doc when it camme out in 2007, and by an odd coincidence I dug it out on YouTube last week.

Dunno why you single out Churchill, other PMs including Supermac played their part, and Mac proved to be a Prime b*****.

Interesting that Penney in a filmed interview went along with the words 'error of judgement' that Mac had edited into Penney's report.

Compulsion of by-standers to fight fires is nothing new. It was the norm in London until the mid nineteenth century, although volunteers usually got paid either in cash or with beer. There was also a mass recruitment of special constables in the General Strike of 1926 (who were totally untrained - just sworn in and given a truncheon, police whistle and armband with 'special constable' on it.)

Reminds me of the final scenes of the film Night of the Lepus, in which an Arizona town is threatened by giant mutant rabbits.

The cops guess that car headlights will mesmerize and stop the rabbits, so they decide to go where they will find lots of occupied cars at night - at a drive-in movie.

Officer Lopez: "Attention! Attention! Ladies and gentlemen, attention! There is a herd of killer rabbits headed this way and we desperately need your help!"
