Also in that article: Amazon Prime Now will allow shoppers to pay £6.99 to get 10,000 products, including everyday items such as coffee, within an hour of ordering.Gosh, that sounds so much better than not paying anything for a five minute walk to the shops! We wanted a camera in Currys recently that they didn't have in stock. Mrs. E had to order it off their website, for delivery to the shop, using her phone, stood in the shop. Apparently the staff systems don't have that facility. (To be fair, they had a black one in stock, but typically she wanted a red one. It was £10 more expensive too. Still....) StainlessSteelCat Posted July 2, 2015 Share Posted July 2, 2015 (edited) My guess is that like other retailers they've been hammered by the users of HotUKDeals bagsying Christmas decorations/pricing mistakes for a couple of quid and then collecting from the shop to save on postage. As the article says only 18% of orders fall into this category. Most businesses can do without that kind of customer - especially as they often come with a huge entitlement chip regarding "their bargain". Some people pay £10 or £15 for a taxi, rather than take a bus. Some people will pay £12 for a pizza rather than heating up a £3 supermarket pizza. With click and collect, you can order during the course of the day and collect it next day (when you get a text) at my nearby waitrose. I can also return items there for immediate refund as well. I think you're misunderstanding the appeal of 'click and collect' style services. They're about convenience - turns out it's more convenient for most people to pick up something at a time that suits them rather than have it delivered to their door at a (often random) time. Even when you can normally just buy it instore, click and collect ensures that it will be there when you go to get it rather than risk it being out of stock. It's also typically quicker to just order online and pick it up than trawl around the store to find it and then queue at the checkout. Dunno if I'd pay £2 for the privilege but I see it's only for orders under £30 so not too much of a hardship as I'd normally use it for higher value things anyway.
