Sounds great, pay to go into a shop to pick up something after clicking on a button on a website, vs. going into a shop to get something and not clicking on a button.

Also in that article:

Amazon Prime Now will allow shoppers to pay £6.99 to get 10,000 products, including everyday items such as coffee, within an hour of ordering.

Gosh, that sounds so much better than not paying anything for a five minute walk to the shops! Still, can't knock progress, walking to the shops is so Victorian.

One day it will seem normal to pay a surcharge for walking to the shops to pick up an item, rather than waiting at home like an internet fed troll - just think of all the exercise and socialisation possibilities, worth paying that little bit extra for, don't you think?!

John Lewis to charge £2 for click-and-collect

So people are going to pay £2 to collect from within the store as opposed to going into the store buying the item and going home?

It;s just more of the same...advertise 1 price...pay another.

I'll buy from Amazon where it;s priced in.

JL are good for big ticket items that are generally delivered free of charge.......can buy a sandwich a frying pan or anything that can be walked home from the shops in a carrier bag in all sorts of good shops for free.....the choice is endless. ;)

We wanted a camera in Currys recently that they didn't have in stock. Mrs. E had to order it off their website, for delivery to the shop, using her phone, stood in the shop. Apparently the staff systems don't have that facility.

(To be fair, they had a black one in stock, but typically she wanted a red one. It was £10 more expensive too. Still....)

My guess is that like other retailers they've been hammered by the users of HotUKDeals bagsying Christmas decorations/pricing mistakes for a couple of quid and then collecting from the shop to save on postage. As the article says only 18% of orders fall into this category.

Most businesses can do without that kind of customer - especially as they often come with a huge entitlement chip regarding "their bargain".

It saves time, it's a market. Deal with it.

Well exactly. £2 for convenience is hardly earth-shaking. Some people pay £10 or £15 for a taxi, rather than take a bus. Some people will pay £12 for a pizza rather than heating up a £3 supermarket pizza.

it was a great free service. I used it even when I made purchases eligible for free delivery. With click and collect, you can order during the course of the day and collect it next day (when you get a text) at my nearby waitrose. I can also return items there for immediate refund as well. It works beautifully and was very fast as well. I will still use it and pay for it if i need an item quickly

John Lewis to charge £2 for click-and-collect

Andy Street, boss of John Lewis, says offering click-and-collect for free is "unsustainable" given the costs

So people are going to pay £2 to collect from within the store as opposed to going into the store buying the item and going home?

You can collect from a Waitrose rather than just john Lewis, which for me is very convenient

I think you're misunderstanding the appeal of 'click and collect' style services. They're about convenience - turns out it's more convenient for most people to pick up something at a time that suits them rather than have it delivered to their door at a (often random) time.

Even when you can normally just buy it instore, click and collect ensures that it will be there when you go to get it rather than risk it being out of stock. It's also typically quicker to just order online and pick it up than trawl around the store to find it and then queue at the checkout.

Dunno if I'd pay £2 for the privilege but I see it's only for orders under £30 so not too much of a hardship as I'd normally use it for higher value things anyway.

..the problem with these stores is they often do not carry the stock ...and to impose a surcharge on this seems a bit cheap.....
